FORT COLLINS (AP) (September 9, 2000) -- East Tennessee State scored on a touchdown pass from Todd Wells to Corey Martin, but the Bucs lost at Colorado State, 41-7 on September 9th.

Cecil Sapp, making his first career start, ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns for Colorado State.

Rams linebacker Rick Crowell, playing his first game since having surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, had seven tackles. He played in four games last year and gained another season of eligibility with a medical hardship waiver.

East Tennessee State, which averaged more than 9 yards per play last week against Liberty, was stymied by Crowell and Colorado State's defense.

Freshman receiver Tim Turner, who caught three passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns a week ago, had three catches for 40 yards.

After being held scoreless in the first quarter, Colorado State took control behind Sapp, backup running back Rahsaan Sanders and quarterback Matt Newton.

Sanders ran for 70 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, and Newton was 16-of-24 with one TD and one interception.

East Tennessee State was able to keep things close until Colorado State scored four times within a 10-minute span of the second quarter.

Sanders started the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run, and Terrance Gibson's first career interception set up Newton's 3-yard TD pass to Frank Rice less then three minutes later.

East Tennessee State's next drive stalled inside Rams territory, and Sapp outran the Bucs' defense for a 54-yard score. Duan Ruff's 1-yard run capped the outburst with 1:05 remaining.
