JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 2, 2013) – With the excitement of football’s return to ETSU continuing to grow, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics welcomed back to campus former football players, coaches, cheerleaders, support personnel and fans for a special “meet and greet” opportunity during Homecoming festivities Saturday morning inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.
ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Richard Sander, head football coach Carl Torbush, and football consultant Phillip Fulmer were on hand to visit with those that gathered Saturday inside the Dome.
“This is really special to invite so many former football players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, and other supporters back to campus for an event,” Torbush said. “What’s even more exciting is to think that two years from now we will have a Homecoming game for our fans to enjoy.”
Sander said that while there has been a lot of interest in football’s return, there will be even more news coming in the next several months, and that the goal of these announcements will be to fuel interest in the local community and beyond.
Sander also said that Saturday’s event was about continuing to rally support for what will be a successful new program.
“Creating and maintaining a championship-level football program is a major initiative and it will take the support of everyone who loves ETSU,” Sander said. “Today was a great opportunity to share information about our plans for the program, but at the same time talk about the financial realities, and that we need everyone’s support if we are going to reach our goals.”
“To see all the alumni back here in the Mini Dome is awesome,” said former Southern Conference first team all-conference linebacker Derek Fudge (1995-99). “This is just great to see everyone back here and excited about football again.”
