JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 7, 2015) – The ETSU football team wrapped up its second day of preseason practice on Friday as the Buccaneers practiced inside the MSHA Athletic Center (Mini Dome).
ETSU, who opens the season on Thursday, Sept. 3 against Kennesaw State, held another 24-period practice in helmets, which lasted roughly two and a half hours. The group of 95 players went through position and conditioning drills, while also featuring some offense vs. defense work. Prior to Friday’s practice, ETSU women’s basketball head coach Brittney Ezell spoke to the team about being a great teammate, life and family, what it means to be a student-athlete, and the impact the football program brings to the campus and community.
For the straight second day, the Blue and Gold practiced inside the Mini Dome due to inclement weather in the area. At the end of practice, head coach Carl Torbush gave the Player of the Day award to wide receiver Drake Powell (Clinton, Tenn.).
Below are quotes from Coach Torbush following day two of practice.
THOUGHTS ON FRIDAY’S PRACTICE
“I thought we had a workmanlike atmosphere today. We made a lot of improvements on offense and defense. Both sides made some great plays and it’ll be interesting once we put the shoulder pads on tomorrow. I’m excited to see what’s ahead us."
ON PRACTICING INSIDE THE DOME
“Having the Dome is a huge benefit to our program. I was told rain came through during today’s practice, so it’s nice not to have those disruptions. I’m not sure when we will get outside, but I am not concerned because we have been getting a lot of work done these first two days. It makes a huge difference to have this indoor facility.”
A LOOK AHEAD TO PRACTICING IN SHOULDER PADS AND THE IMPACT OF CORNERBACK DAREN ARDIS
“We need to find out who can play and it’ll be exciting to see us put on the shoulder pads tomorrow. Daren (Ardis) had another solid day of practice. I’m not ready to put the blue dot on him, but if he continues to do what he’s been doing, I believe he will be a good player. I think we have some good cornerbacks and wide receivers, and once we put the pads on we will have some battles out there.”
ETSU will practice in shoulder pads for the first time on Saturday as practice is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Bucs are slated to practice outdoors on the fields located next to the ETSU Center for Physical Activity. Stay tuned to Twitter for schedule changes.
