ETSU holds first outdoor practice in shoulder pads on Saturday

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 8, 2015) – After spending the first two days of preseason practice inside the Mini Dome, the ETSU football team was able to take advantage of the warm summer weather and held its first outdoor practice on Saturday afternoon. The practice was held at the fields located next to the ETSU Center for Physical Activity.

The Bucs, who are in day three of the NCAA acclimatization period, practiced in shoulder pads for the first time this preseason. ETSU will have one more practice on Sunday with helmet and shoulder pads before going to full pads on Monday.

Like the their first two days of camp, the Bucs held a 24-period practice, lasting two and a half hours.

The temperature – recorded by ETSU’s athletic training staff at the beginning of practice – was 81 degrees and sunny.

Below are comments from head coach Carl Torbush on today’s practice.

THOUGHTS ON TODAY’S PRACTICE

“We are still in the acclimatization period and that is what today’s practice was. Today we got familiar with practicing outside and with shoulder pads on for the first time this preseason."

“I thought we were a little rusty early, but we picked up the tempo as the day went on. I really like our athleticism. We have a lot of guys who can make plays for us out there. We just need to show more consistency on both sides of the ball."

"Individually, we have some players who are stepping up. In about a week we will start making some decisions, come out with a depth chart and begin our preparations for Kennesaw State."

"Overall, I like the effort and intensity that we have been showing, but the biggest thing is working on our consistency.”

ON WHAT TO EXPECT TOMORROW

“We need to improve on what we did today. Tomorrow will be very similar to today’s practice. I’ll be looking for more consistency, and tomorrow is important, because we go into the first day of full pads on Monday. It (practicing in full pads) will be a little bit different – just like today was different than yesterday. There will always be differences anytime you go from wearing shorts, to shoulder pads into full pads, but right now is a very important time to push through and get tougher mentally and physically.”

Sunday’s practice is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. outside on the practice fields located next to the ETSU Center for Physical Activity. Stay tuned to Twitter for schedule changes
