JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 9, 2015) – For the second straight day, the ETSU football team practiced outdoors in helmets and shoulder pads as the Buccaneers wrapped up their fourth preseason practice Sunday afternoon on the practice fields near the CPA.
On Monday, the Blue and Gold will practice in full pads beginning at 3:30 p.m. Practice will be held at the outdoor practice fields. Stay tuned to Twitter for schedule changes.
ETSU football head coach Carl Torbush spoke to the media after practice. Below are his comments…
THOUGHTS ON SUNDAY’S PRACTICE
“I thought we had more consistency today and once we got loose the pace picked up. The receivers did some nice things. There’s a lot of competition going on right now.”
ON QUARTERBACKS AUSTIN HERINK AND NICK SEXTON
“I like Austin (Herink) and Nick (Sexton) because they are great leaders and do things the right way. They both have been working hard. It’ll be interesting once we start hitting and scrimmaging to see who will step forward. If we played a game tomorrow, Austin and Nick are the two guys we would play, but there’s still time for the other quarterbacks to beat them out.”
WHEN WILL A DEPTH CHART WILL BE RELEASED
“We won’t put out a depth chart until after our first scrimmage. From there, we will start narrowing down our two-deep and travel roster, while deciding on who will red-shirt. Like I have said in the past, we want to build this program the right way. We can’t play the freshman along with the red-shirt freshman all at once. If we do, we will have too many seniors in three years... That’s not what we want to do. We want to build a program that will give us a chance to win year in and year out.”
Red-shirt freshman quarterback Austin Herink (Cleveland, Tenn.) also spoke to the media after practice. Below are his comments…
THOUGHTS ON THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF PRACTICE
“We’ve been waiting for a couple months to get out here and play football. It’s fun to put the pads back on and get to work.”
ON QUARTERBACK COMPETITION
“It’s always good to have competition. It brings out the best in everyone. I think the new guys are picking up the offense really well so far, while Nick (Sexton) and I are trying to build on what we did in spring practice. Overall, everything is going well.”
ON WHAT HE DID DURING THE OFF-SEASON
“I didn’t know what to expect in the spring since I came over from MTSU, so this off-season I practiced on my footwork and continued learning the playbook. My main goal was to work hard and become more familiar with the offense.”
