JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 20, 2015) – ETSU freshman linebacker Dylan Weigel (Pickerington, Ohio) was named one of the top five freshmen players in the FCS by Brian McLaughlin of HERO Sports.
Weigel, who has started all six games for the Buccaneers, has totaled 66 tackles (seven for loss) and has two fumble recoveries. The Pickerington, Ohio native ranks fifth in FCS in solo tackles per game (6.3) and 13th in total tackles per game (11.0), while his 20-tackle performance against Emory & Henry is tied for the fourth highest total this season. The 20 tackles are also tied for the second-most in ETSU single-game history.
“Dylan has been one of our most consistent players through the first six games,” said head coach Carl Torbush. “He’s our leader on defense and has great instincts. Dylan is a hard-nosed player and a sure tackler. We are very proud to have him get this recognition.”
The red-shirt freshman linebacker has registered double-digit tackles in four of his six first games. Along with his 20-tackle game, Weigel posted 10 tackles and a fumble recovery against Kennesaw State, 14 tackles (2.5 for loss) versus Maryville, and most recently 11 tackles at Mercer last Saturday. Weigel also recovered a fumble on the opening drive against the Bears.
Weigel and the Buccaneers gear up for a road game at No. 19/21 Montana State this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4:35 EDT at Bobcat Stadium.
