Weigel named second team All-SoCon, Gatewood picks up third team honor

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 4, 2016) – Sophomore linebackers Dylan Weigel (Pickerington, Ohio) and Austin Gatewood (Ooltewah, Tenn.) earned Preseason All-Southern Conference honors via College Sports Madness on Thursday. 

Weigel, who was tabbed second team all-conference by the SoCon coaches a week ago, earned the same honor by College Sports Madness, while Gatewood picked up third team accolades.

Weigel led all FCS players in solo tackles per game (7.2) and was named a finalist for the STATS FCS Freshman of the Year award in 2015. The Pickerington, Ohio native totaled a team-leading 127 tackles in 11 games a year ago, which ranked ninth in total tackles per game among FCS players (11.5). Weigel recorded 20 tackles against Emory & Henry, which was tied for the sixth highest total in FCS play a year ago. The 20 tackles were the most by a freshman at the FCS level and were tied for the second-most in ETSU single-game history. Weigel registered double-digit tackles in nine of the 11 games, while he also totaled 10.5 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries on the season. 

Gatewood started all 11 games for the Bucs in 2015, and totaled 57 tackles (33 solo/24 assisted), eight tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception and four quarterback hurries. Gatewood, a SoCon All-Academic Honor Roll member, posted at least one tackle in every game – including a season-high 10 tackles at Mercer. The Ooltewah, Tenn. native registered eight tackles (five solo), 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble at Robert Morris, while his first collegiate interception came against Saint Francis. 

The Bucs report to campus on Thursday and open fall camp Friday. ETSU’s first practice is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., on the practice fields adjacent the Basler Center for Physical Activity.
