This is the official headquarters for ETSU football fall camp. Follow what's going on as the Buccaneers prep for the 2016 season. This page will be updated each day with coach/player interviews, highlights, social media coverage and news coverage throughout the Tri-Cities. 

Aug. 19 - Day 13 Recap

The ETSU football team returned to the practice fields Friday morning after having its scrimmage rained out on Thursday. Thursday's scrimmage will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m., outside on the CPA practice fields.

Following Friday's practice, offensive line coach Erik Losey along with offensive linemen Matt Brewer (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Myles Smith (Chattanooga, Tenn.) talked about the improvement in the offensive line during fall camp. 

Aug. 17

ETSU football head coach Carl Torbush and his staff announced changes to the Buccaneers’ weekend practice schedule on Thursday night. 

The Bucs – who were forced to postpone Thursday’s scrimmage due to inclement weather and the MSHA Athletics Center being unavailable – will practice Friday morning at 9 a.m., outside on the ETSU Practice Fields. The scrimmage has been moved to Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m., outside on the practice fields. 

ETSU’s scrimmages and practices are open to the general public.

Aug. 16 – Day 12 Recap   

The Buccaneer football team made their final tune up for Thursday’s scrimmage as ETSU wrapped up its 12th fall camp practice on Wednesday. 

Like Tuesday, the Bucs started practice outside on the practice fields before Mother Nature forced the Blue and Gold to finish up the remaining periods inside the MSHA Athletic Center. 

ETSU holds its second scrimmage of fall camp Thursday afternoon, which begins at 2 p.m., outside on the CPA Practice Fields. 

Following practice, head coach Carl Torbush, junior running back Falon Lee (Macclenny, Fla.) and sophomore linebacker Austin Gatewood (Ooltewah, Tenn.) previewed Thursday’s scrimmage.

Aug. 16 – Day 11 Recap  

The ETSU football team moved one step closer to its Sept. 3 season opener at Kennesaw State, as the Buccaneer wrapped up their 11th fall camp practice on Tuesday afternoon. 

ETSU was able to get half of its practice in outside on the CPA Practice Fields; however, midway through, Mother Nature rolled in and the Blue and Gold were forced to wrap up Tuesday’s drills inside the MSHA Athletic Center. 

Following practice, the Buccaneer Sports Network caught up with transfers Jevon Gooden (Jamaica Queens, N.Y.), Vincent Lowe (Chesapeake, Va.), Alex Rios (Tucson, Ariz.) and Paul Hunter (Denton, Texas) as they talked about making their journey to ETSU. Below is video of them talking about coming to ETSU and the progress being made in fall camp. 

The Bucs are back in action again Wednesday afternoon as ETSU holds another practice before scrimmaging again on Thursday. Wednesday’s practice is set for 3:30 p.m., while Thursday’s scrimmage will start at 2 p.m., outside on the practice fields.

Aug. 15 – Day 10 Recap 

A day after reviewing film from last Saturday’s scrimmage, the ETSU football went back to work as the Bucs held their 10th practice of fall camp on Monday afternoon. 

Due to lightning and inclement weather in the area, the two-hour, 24-period practice was held inside the MSHA Athletic Center. 

The Bucs, who were in full pads, continued their preparations for Thursday’s second scrimmage of fall camp. 

Following practice, the Buccaneer Sports Network caught up with Billy Taylor (Defensive Coordinator), Mike O’Cain (Offensive Coordinator), sophomore defensive lineman Chris Bouyer (Rock Hill, S.C.) and red-shirt freshman Jack Shoulders (Nashville, Tenn.) to get their thoughts on last Saturday’s scrimmage. Below are the post-practice interviews.

ETSU returns to practice on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., while Thursday’s scrimmage is set for 2 p.m., outside on the CPA Practice Fields.

Aug. 13 - Day Nine Recap 

The ETSU football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning at the CPA Practice Fields.

Below are some key stats from Saturday’s scrimmage.

DEFENSE

  • Sophomore linebacker Dylan Weigel (Pickerington, Ohio) led the defense with six tackles (one for loss)
  • Red-shirt freshman defensive end Nasir Player (Columbia, S.C.) had five tackles (three for loss) and three sacks
  • Freshman linebacker Colton Lakes (Loveland, Ohio) had five tackles (one for loss), one sack, one interception and one forced fumble
  • Senior defensive back Ryan Powers (Jupiter, Fla.) recorded four tackles
  • Junior defensive back Daren Ardis (Bradenton, Fla.) finished with two tackles and a pass break up
  • Sophomore linebacker Austin Gatewood (Ooltewah, Tenn.) ended with two tackles and one sack
  • Freshman defensive back Jeremy Lewis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) totaled two tackles and a fumble recovery
  • Red-shirt freshman defensive end Jason Maduafokwa (Seymour, Tenn.) registered one sack
  • Junior defensive lineman Royce Turnbull (Charlotte, N.C.) had three tackles (two for a loss) and one sack

OFFENSE

Passing

  • Sophomore Austin Herink (Cleveland, Tenn.) was 5-for-9 with 110 yards passing and one touchdown; Herink also had two rushes for 15 yards
  • Sophomore Nick Sexton (Seymour, Tenn.) went 7-of-15 with 75 yards, one touchdown and one interception
  • Red-shirt freshman Dylan Wieger (Kingsport, Tenn.) was 9-for-16 with 69 yards

Rushing

  • Sophomore running back Matt Thompson (Morristown, Tenn.) led the Bucs with 10 rushes for 53 yards and one touchdown
  • Red-shirt freshman wide receiver Jack Shoulders (Nashville, Tenn.) rushed for a 17-yard touchdown; Shoulders also had one reception for nine yards
  • As a unit, ETSU’s running backs rushed for 139 yards on 34 carries with two touchdowns

Receiving

  • Junior wide receiver Vincent Lowe (Chesapeake, Va.) had a 60-yard touchdown reception on the opening drive
  • Sophomore tight end Justin Gilliam (Jonesville, Va.) caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Sexton
  • Wide receivers Kobe Kelley (Knoxville, Tenn.), Braxton Richburg (Hoschton, Ga.), Hunter Wike (Canton, N.C.), Caleb Woody (Maryville, Tenn.) and Isaiah Gilmore (Seymour, Tenn.) all two receptions
  • In total, 16 players finished with at least one reception, while the Buccaneer receivers totaled 21 catches for 254 yards and two touchdowns

Aug. 12 - Day Eight Recap

After holding a brief walk-through earlier in the day, the ETSU football team held Media Day on Friday afternoon inside the MSHA Athletic Center. 

The Bucs’ 15-period practice on Friday marked their final prep work before holding the first live scrimmage of the fall camp on Saturday morning. The scrimmage is set for 10:30 a.m., on the CPA Practice Fields.

Aug. 11 - Day Seven Recap 

The ETSU football team held its final practice in full pads before Saturday’s scrimmage on Thursday afternoon on the CPA Practice Fields. 

For the second straight day, the Bucs ran a handful of live scrimmage plays. Below are some highlights. 

After practice, the Buccaneer Sports Network caught up with head coach Carl Torbush and sophomore wide receiver Drake Powell (Clinton, Tenn.) to get their thoughts on practicing the last three days in full pads and what it takes to get through fall camp. 

The Bucs will hold a brief 15-period practice on Friday morning before holding Media Day activities on Friday afternoon.

Aug. 10 - Day Six Recap 

The ETSU football team completed its sixth day of fall camp as the Bucs held another two-hour, 24-period practice outside on the CPA Practice Fields on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Bucs scrimmaged live for a couple of periods on Wednesday. Below are a few highlights. 

Following practice, ETSU offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike O'Cain and sophomore quarterback Austin Herink (Cleveland, Tenn.) talked about the first six days of camp, the progress made by the returners and previewed Saturday's scrimmage. 

The Blue and Gold will hold one more full practice on Thursday afternoon before having a brief practice on Friday in preparation for Saturday's scrimmage.

Aug. 9 - Day Five Recap

For the first time in fall camp, the ETSU football team was able to practice in full pads as the Blue and Gold concluded day five of camp Tuesday afternoon on CPA Practice Fields.

After practice, head coach Carl Torbush and senior defensive back Tavian Lott (D’Lo, Miss.) talked with the Buccaneer Sports Network. Coach Torbush reflected on the first five days of fall camp and talked about Saturday’s upcoming scrimmage, while Lott was asked about the progress being made from last season.

The Bucs return to practice on Wednesday afternoon as they hit the field at 3:30 p.m.

Aug. 8 – Day Four Recap

After being forced to practice indoors on Sunday, the ETSU football team went back outdoors as the Buccaneers wrapped up their fourth fall camp practice on Monday afternoon on the CPA Practice Fields. 

The Blue and Gold held a competitive two-hour, 24-period practice in the heat on Monday. ETSU will now hold its first practice in full pads Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. 

Prior to practice, WJHL’s Kane O’Neill caught up with head coach Carl Torbush. Coach talked about Saturday’s upcoming scrimmage, the battle for positions and the progress of the Football Stadium construction. 

The StowersCat Drone was also at practice on Monday and took a glimpse of the construction from the football stadium.

The ETSU football team held its third practice of fall camp on Sunday afternoon. Due to inclement weather that hit the Tri-Cities region, the Buccaneers were forced to move practice inside the MSHA Athletic Center.

Aug. 6 – Day Two Recap 

The Buccaneers concluded their second day of fall camp on Saturday afternoon. The Blue and Gold took advantage of the sunny temperatures in the Tri-Cites, as ETSU held its first outdoor practice on the CPA Practice Fields. As they did on Friday, the Bucs held another 24-period, two-hour practice, and now they put on the shoulder pads for the first time on Sunday. Sunday’s practice begins at 3:30 p.m.

Following practice, the Buccaneer Sports Network caught up with head coach Carl Torbush, sophomore offensive lineman Matt Brewer (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore linebacker Trey Quillin (New Albany, Ohio). Below are their interviews.

Aug. 5 - Bucs Open Fall Camp

With just about four weeks until the season opener at Kennesaw State, the ETSU football team got to work as the Bucs began fall camp on Friday afternoon inside the MSHA Athletic Center.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, practice was moved inside the Mini Dome as the Bucs held a 24-period practice which lasted two and a half hours.

Sophomore Austin Herink (Cleveland, Tenn.) took the reps as the number one quarterback, while fellow sophomore quarterback Nick Sexton (Seymour, Tenn.) connected on a deep pass to sophomore wide receiver Hank Blank (Knoxville, Tenn.). Freshman linebacker Colton Lakes (Loveland, Ohio) got the defense pumped up with an interception, while sophomore Alonzo Francois (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and red-shirt freshman Kevin Ferguson (Cincinnati, Ohio) both had fumble recoveries.

The Bucs return to the gridiron on Saturday afternoon as practice #2 is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Please note, practices and scrimmages are open to the general public and will be held at the ETSU Practice Fields, which are adjacent the Basler Center of Physical Activity (CPA).
