ETSU football to hold second fall camp scrimmage on Thursday

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 17, 2016) – The ETSU football team will hold its second scrimmage of fall camp on Thursday afternoon. Game time is set for 2 p.m., at the ETSU Practice Fields. 

Both the offense and defense generated some highlights last Saturday. The Buccaneer defense totaled 68 tackles and forced two turnovers (one fumble and one interception), while red-shirt freshman defensive end Nasir Player (Columbia, S.C.), freshman linebacker Colton Lakes (Loveland, Ohio), sophomore linebacker Austin Gatewood (Ooltewah, Tenn.), red-shirt freshman defensive end Jason Maduafokwa (Seymour, Tenn.) and junior defensive lineman Royce Turnbull (Charlotte, N.C.) all registered at least one sack. Meanwhile, sophomore linebacker Dylan Weigel (Pickerington, Ohio) – a preseason all-conference selection – paced the Blue and Gold with six tackles. 

On offense, 16 players finished with at least one reception, while the Buccaneer receivers totaled 21 catches for 254 yards and two touchdowns. ETSU’s running backs also carried the ball 34 times for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Matt Thompson (Morristown, Tenn.) led the Bucs with 10 rushes for 53 yards and one touchdown, while red-shirt freshman wide receiver Jack Shoulders (Nashville, Tenn.) rushed for a 17-yard touchdown. Junior wide receiver Vincent Lowe (Chesapeake, Va.) and sophomore tight end Justin Gilliam (Jonesville, Va.) hauled in the touchdown receptions. Sophomore quarterback Austin Herink (Cleveland, Tenn.) – who went 5-for-9 for 110 yards – found Lowe for a 60-yard strike on the opening drive, while fellow sophomore Nick Sexton (Seymour, Tenn.) connected on a 35-yard score to Gilliam. 

Following Thursday’s scrimmage, Coach Torbush and members of the ETSU football team will be on hand at Food City Race Night from 6-8 p.m., signing autographs and promoting the upcoming season. The event will be held on State Street in Bristol. 

ETSU’s final scrimmage will be held on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m., at Kermit Tipton Stadium. After the scrimmage at Kermit Tipton Stadium, ETSU will hold Fan Appreciation Night, which allows the Buccaneer faithful an opportunity to meet the team and get autographs. The scrimmage will last approximately an hour and a half.
