JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 6, 2016) – Following a double-digit tackle performance in last weekend’s season-opening win at Kennesaw State, sophomore linebacker Dylan Weigel (Pickerington, Ohio) was tabbed Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week via College Sports Madness on Tuesday.
Weigel – a preseason all-conference selection – picked up right where he left off from his freshman season as he totaled a team-leading 11 tackles (nine solo) and had one fumble recovery in the 20-17 victory over Kennesaw State last Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
The Pickerington, Ohio native was a finalist for the STATS FCS Freshman of the Year award a year ago as he totaled a team-leading 127 tackles in 11 games for the Buccaneers. The Buccaneer linebacker led all FCS players in solo tackles per game (7.2) and ranked ninth in total tackles per game (11.5), while he paced the ETSU defense in tackles eight times as a freshman and totaled double-digit tackles nine times.
The win at Kennesaw State was the first FCS victory for the Bucs since a 16-13 win over The Citadel in the 2003 season finale. ETSU returned to the gridiron as a FCS Independent in 2015 and is a member of the SoCon this season.
ETSU – who is in its open week – returns to action Saturday, Sept. 17 when the Bucs host Western Carolina in its conference opener at Bristol Motor Speedway. For tickets, please call 423-BRISTOL.
