ETSU Football announces Bowman Jewelers Player of the Game awards

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 25, 2016) – Following each game during the 2016 college football season, ETSU head coach Carl Torbush will announce the Bowman Jewelers Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Game, along with the “Effort Play of the Game” and the “Scout Team Player of the Week” awards.    

Below are the recipients from Saturday’s game at Wofford. 

OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Dalton Ponchillia – WR – Nashville, Tenn.

  • Graded out at 100-percent
  • Led team with three receptions
  • Fielded one punt return 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME

Kahlil Mitchell – LB – South Pittsburg, Tenn.

  • Registered five solo tackles
  • Posted ETSU’s only sack
  • Graded out at 80-percent 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Adam Mullins – LS – Elizabethton, Tenn.

  • Was 9-for-9 with snaps on target
  • Recorded one tackle 

EFFORT PLAY OF THE GAME

Redshirt freshman linebacker Jason Maduafokwa (Seymour, Tenn.) chasing down Wofford quarterback Brandon Goodson on the ETSU sideline for a 1-yard loss with 6:49 remaining in the third quarter. It was one of two tackles for loss for the Buccaneer linebacker. 

SCOUT TEAM PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

This week Coach Torbush and the Buccaneer coaching staff recognized Jack Jones (Bristol, Tenn.) and Matt Williams (Newton, N.C.) as the “Scout Team Players of the Week.”  

Jones is a 6-foot, 209-pound redshirt sophomore defensive back and Williams is a 6-foot-1, 194-pound redshirt freshman wide receiver.   

ABOUT JONES

Named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll in 2015 … Played in all 11 games last season … Totaled eight tackles (four solo) … Recorded first collegiate tackle at Charleston Southern (Sept. 17) … Season-high two solo tackles at Mercer … Posted at least one tackle in five straight games from Sept. 17-Oct. 24. 

ABOUT WILLIAMS

Was a redshirt last season … A four-sport athlete from Fred T. Foard High School, Williams played four seasons of football, along with basketball, track and golf … As a senior, was the Northwestern 3A-4A Conference Player of the Year and earned the WNNC Golden Helmet for Player of the Year … Had the fourth best yardage total in North Carolina history with 557 yards in a game versus Hibriten … Had 2,012 yards passing as a senior with 19 passing touchdowns, while rushing for another 1,068 yards and 13 touchdowns on 117 carries … Finished with 4,689 yards passing and 2,320 yards rushing with a total of 67 touchdowns for his career.
