ETSU Football announces Bowman Jewelers Player of the Game awards

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 2, 2016) – Following each game during the 2016 college football season, ETSU head coach Carl Torbush will announce the Bowman Jewelers Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Game, along with the “Effort Play of the Game,” and “Show Team Players of the Week” awards.       

Below are the recipients from Saturday’s win over Western Carolina.    

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME

Alex Rios – OL – Tucson, Ariz.

  • Graded out at 83-percent
  • Did not allow a pressure or sack
  • Recorded two knockdowns
  • Had zero missed assignments 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME

Tavian Lott – DB – D’Lo, Miss.

  • Totaled six tackles and one pass break up
  • Recorded his first interception of the season; third of his career
  • Graded out at 94-percent 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE GAME

JD Griffin – LB – Kodak, Tenn.

  • Finished with two solo tackles
  • One tackle on punt and one tackle on kickoff cover 

EFFORT PLAYS OF THE GAME

Junior defensive back Daren Ardis’ (Bradenton, Fla.) 87-yard fumble return with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter … Chattanooga drove 70 yards in 15 plays to get to the ETSU 1-yard line, but the Buccaneer defense forced a fumble on a fourth-down run by Alex Trotter, while Ardis recovered and took it 87 yards to the Chattanooga 11-yard line … Ardis’ 87-yard fumble return matched the longest in school history ... Ardis joins former Buccaneer Charles Stein at the top of that list ... Stein returned a fumble 87 yards in 1978 against Appalachian State ...The fumble recovery marked Ardis’ first in an ETSU uniform, while he has also posted two forced fumbles this season … The turnover led to an ETSU touchdown as quarterback Nick Sexton (Seymour, Tenn.) connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Ponchillia (Nashville, Tenn.) two plays later. 

SHOW TEAM PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

This week Coach Torbush and the Buccaneer coaching staff recognized Olajuwon Pinkelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Cameron Parker (Asheville, N.C.) as the “Show Team Players of the Week.” 

Pinkelton is a 6-foot-7, 231-pound freshman defensive lineman and Parker is a 6-foot-9, 291-pound freshman offensive lineman.   

ABOUT PINKELTON

Multi-sport athlete at Mount Healthy High School … Lettered in both football and basketball … Only played one season of football for the Fighting Owls … Recorded 50 total tackles, 20 tackles for loss and three sacks in senior season … Helped lead Mount Healthy to the Southwest Ohio Conference championship … Two-time first team all-conference selection in basketball; led the conference in block shots (1.6) his senior year.  

ABOUT PARKER

Three-year letterwinner for Coach Chris Deal at TC Roberson … Earned All-Western North Carolina Lineman honors … Named All-Mountain Athletic Conference … Was the first pick in the East-West All-Star Game … Totaled 22 pancake blocks as a senior and 18 in his junior season.
