ETSU Football announces Bowman Jewelers Player of the Game awards

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 9, 2016) – Following each game during the 2016 college football season, ETSU head coach Carl Torbush will announce the Bowman Jewelers Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Game, along with the “Effort Play of the Game,” and “Show Team Players of the Week” awards.       

Below are the recipients from Saturday’s game at VMI.

OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Malik Styles – WR – Dandridge, Tenn.

  • Recorded two catches for 41 yards
  • Registered his first collegiate touchdown on a 3-yard yard reception from Nick Sexton
  • Styles’ 38-yard catch marked the longest reception of his career 

Dontavius Monroe – RB – Delray Beach, Fla.

  • Finished with 14 carries for 59 yards
  • Averaged 4.2 yards per carry
  • Set season highs in rushing attempts and rushing yards
  • Four of his runs went for first downs – including 18 and 10-yard runs 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME

Austin Gatewood – LB – Ooltewah, Tenn.

  • Posted a season-high nine tackles
  • Had one tackle for loss
  • Four solo tackles 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE GAME

Domenique Williams – DB – Charlotte, N.C.

  • Five kickoff returns for 94 yards
  • Had a 25-yard kickoff return
  • Averaged 18.8 yards per return
  • Had one tackle on kickoff coverage 

EFFORT PLAYS OF THE GAME

Malik Styles and freshman defensive back Jeremy Lewis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) earned co-Effort Plays of the Game … Styles’ play was his 38-yard reception on a 3rd-and-4 pass from Nick Sexton … Lewis’ play was his first collegiate interception … Lewis intercepted a pass from VMI quarterback Austin Coulling on a 2nd-and-3 play in the fourth quarter. 

SHOW TEAM PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

This week Coach Torbush and the Buccaneer coaching staff recognized Nick Payne (Greeneville, Tenn.) and Quan Harrison (Greeneville, Tenn.) as the “Show Team Players of the Week.”

Payne is a 6-foot-3, 196-pound freshman defensive back and Harrison is a 5-foot-9, 180-pound freshman wide receiver.
