ETSU Football announces Bowman Jewelers Player of the Game awards

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 6, 2016) – Following each game during the 2016 college football season, ETSU head coach Carl Torbush announces the Bowman Jewelers Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Game, along with the “Effort Play of the Game” and “Show Team Players of the Week” awards.       

Below are the recipients from Saturday’s game at Mercer. 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME

Drake Powell – WR – Clinton, Tenn.

  • Graded out at 89 percent
  • Eight receptions for 143 yards and one touchdown
  • Set career highs in receptions and receiving yards
  • Caught his first collegiate touchdown on a 69-yard pass play in the third quarter to put ETSU ahead, 10-7
  • The 69-yard play marked the Bucs’ longest play since restarting the program a year ago
  • This marks the second straight week Powell has received the award 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME

Dylan Weigel – LB – Pickerington, Ohio

  • Graded out at 83 percent
  • Totaled 11 tackles and one fumble recovery
  • Four solo tackles
  • Has recorded double-digit tackles 15 times in his career (20 games played) 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE GAME

Artevius Smith – WR – Birmingham, Ala.

  • Registered three special teams tackles
  • One tackle on kickoff coverage and two on punt coverage
  • Had two receptions for 16 yards – Smith’s 12-yard reception came on 3rd-and-9, which the drive resulted in a 32-yard JJ Jerman (Seymour, Tenn.) field goal

EFFORT PLAY OF THE GAME

Junior offensive lineman Alex Rios (Tucson, Ariz.) earned the Effort Play of the Game award … Rios kept a third quarter scoring drive alive for the Buccaneers when he recovered a Chad Pritchard (Elizabethton, Tenn.) fumble on the ETSU 40-yard line … Later on that drive, Jerman made his 32-yard field goal to put ETSU ahead, 13-7.

SHOW TEAM PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

This week Coach Torbush and the Buccaneer coaching staff recognized Toy’Shaun Winton (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Asley Haynes (Roan Mountain, Tenn.) as the “Show Team Players of the Week.” 

Winton is a 5-foot-10, 174-pound red-shirt sophomore defensive back and Haynes is a 6-foot-2, 269-pound red-shirt sophomore offensive lineman.
