ETSU sophomore kicker picks up second weekly award this season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Nov. 21, 2016) – For the second time this season, ETSU sophomore kicker JJ Jerman (Seymour, Tenn.) earned Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors as the league office announced its weekly award winners on Monday for games played on Nov. 19.

Jerman kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired to lift ETSU to a 15-14 win over No. 18 Samford on Saturday at Kermit Tipton Stadium. For the game, Jerman – who made his second game-winning field goal of the season – made all three of his attempts on Saturday against the Bulldogs. From there, Jerman remained perfect as his final kick of the night rallied the Bucs past Samford for ETSU’s first win over a ranked opponent since downing No. 1 Georgia Southern in 2001.

Jerman’s three field goals made tied a career high, while it also tied for the most makes by a SoCon kicker this season.

This marks the second weekly honor for Jerman this season, while it’s the fourth time the Bucs have received a Player of the Week award this year. Sophomore quarterback Austin Herink (Cleveland, Tenn.) was named Offensive Player of the Week following ETSU’s 34-31 win over Western Carolina on Sept. 17, while junior defensive back Paul Hunter (Denton, Texas) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors with his strong effort against No. 5 The Citadel.
