Johnson City, Tenn. (Aug. 14, 2002) - The sound was unmistakable this morning in Memorial Center on the campus of East Tennessee State, the sound of pad on pad as the Buccaneer football team had its first practice in full pads.
For the first time since practice started on Saturday, the defense squared off against the offense in some drills. Offensively Scott Carter (Knoxville, Tenn.) made some nice runs and came up with a diving catch in the end zone on drills inside the 10-yard line. The returning experience of the ETSU defense (all 11 starters back) also showed, with defenders showing up in the offensive backfield on a number of occasions to break up plays.
"I think we have made a lot of progress so far," said head coach Paul Hamilton. "I think the thing we have to be concerned about, as always in two-a-days, is guys getting bumps and bruises or tweaks to hamstrings and ankles. But we are doing fine so far and the kids are working hard and have a lot of enthusiasm. We are looking forward to putting the pads on and see where we are at as far as competing against each other."
