(April 6, 2002) - East Tennessee State University's football team closed out its spring practice season with its annual Blue/Gold game, which was played at the Stone Castle at Tennessee High School in Bristol this afternoon. The Blue team defeated the Gold 16-6 in a contest that saw the offenses account for just one touchdown. The Blue team had the first crack in the game and made it count, driving the ball down the field and getting a 36-yard field goal from Jonathan Godfrey (Johnson City, Tenn.). The highlight of that drive was a 40-yard scamper by Leeshaun Taylor (Clinton, Tenn.). The Blue team answered on its first drive of the day, scoring the game's only touchdown on a 26-yard scamper by Andrew Nuckolls (Tunnell Hill, Ga.). Quarterback Dashannon Gamble (Ladson, S.C.) had a strong showing on the day, quarterbacking the Blue team in the first half and the Gold team in the second half. Altogether he completed 9-of-17 attempts for 120 yards and no interceptions. He also ran for 49 yards on 17 carries. Mondo Miller (Chamblee, Ga.) had the best day of the running backs, carrying the ball 20 times for 61 yards. Marcus Barnes (Memphis, Tenn.) totaled 28 yards on seven carries before leaving the game in the first half after taking a hard hit. All-America candidate Cecil Moore(Morristown, Tenn.) led the receiving corps, snaring four balls for 78 yards. Nuckolls also had a strong showing, with four catches for 21 yards. ETSU's field goal kickers had a strong showing, with Godfrey adding a 29-yarder to his total, while Scott Salmons (Smyrna, Tenn.) booted three through the uprights, hitting from 31, 27 and 23 yards out. "This was good for us," said head coach Paul Hamilton. "We needed to come out here and play in a game-type setting. You really learn a lot about guys when you come into this type of situation. I thought that our defense flew around and did some good things, and offenisvely I think I learned a little bit more about our football team. "I think we will continue to progress as a defensive football team. I think we have a chance to be solid there; we built a lot of depth there this spring. I was pleased with our kicking game today, our placekickers did some good things out here. Offensively I think we know a lot more about our football team. We progressed offensively this spring and we will be able to come back this August and pick it up at a good starting point."
