JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 29, 2003) - East Tennessee State redshirt freshman linebacker Mike Cullen (Roswell, Ga.) was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Week for his performance Saturday afternoon against Western Carolina. Cullen has been an impact player for the Buccaneers, starting each of his first five games at inside linebacker. But he had his finest performance of the season against the Catamounts, flirting with an ETSU record that has stood for a decade. Cullen was all over the field Saturday, tallying an incredible 20 tackles. His performance is the most tackles in a game by a Southern Conference player this season, and is just two tackles behind the Buccaneer record holder, Nakia Thomas, who had 22 tackles against Appalachian State in 1993. Cullen leads the Buccaneers with 57 tackles, 15 more than his closest teammate. He leads the conference in total tackles, and with 11.4 stops per game, is second in the SoCon, just .4 behind Furman linebacker Mike Killian. He is also second on the team with 5.5 tackles for a loss and also has a sack and a fumble recovery on the season. East Tennessee State returns to action on Saturday afternoon against SoCon rival Appalachian State at 3:30 p.m. from Kidd-Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C. The game will be televised by The Football Network, visit www.footballnetwork.com for information on availability.
