Cardinal Park -- Home of the Bucs
Howard Johnson Field, more commonly known as Cardinal Park, has been home to the Buccaneers for the past 15 years. The facility, which was built in 1923, is also home to the Johnson City Cardinals, a rookie league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
In 1994, the first remodeling in 39 years was begun. The renovations included a new press box, dressing rooms, dugouts, concession stands, spectator seating and scoreboard.
The dimensions of Cardinal Park are 330 to left field, 430 to center field, and 330 to right field. Stadium capacity is approximately 2,000.
On June 16, 1997, the Park was named after Howard Johnson, the founding director of the Johnson City Parks and Recreation Board. Mr. Johnson worked for the city for 48 years, 33 as the Director of Parks and Recreation. He died in April of 1979.
Many players who have played in the major leagues played at Howard Johnson Field over the years. Included among the players who have gone on to the major leagues are Ron Guidry (Yankees), Tommy Herr (Cardinals), Bobby Grich (Yankees), Jim Frey (Manager, Chicago Cubs), Nolan Ryan (Astros), Dwight Gooden (Mets), Dale Murphy (Braves), Denny McClain (Tigers), Danny Cox (Cardinals), Kent Hrbek (Twins), Boog Powell (Orioles), Sparky Lyle (Yankees), Don Baylor (Orioles), Kirby Puckett (Twins), and Gregg Jeffries (Mets).
