Monday, June 30, 2003JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 30, 2003) - East Tennessee State University men's basketball coach Murry Bartow announced Monday that former Memphis White Station standout Travis Strong (Memphis) has signed a grant-in-aid to play basketball for the Buccaneers this season. Strong, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound guard, averaged 14 points and three steals a game last season in helping lead White Station to its second-straight TSSAA Class AAA state championship. Known for his athleticism and tenacious defensive play, Strong is a very capable outside shooter and outstanding leaper. "We're really excited that Travis has decided to be a part of our program here at ETSU," said Bartow, who is in his first season at ETSU. "Travis is a proven winner and you can see that in the fact he comes from an incredibly successful high school program that has gone 72-4 over the last two seasons. He is the kind of player that will fit well with the players we already have in place." Strong's accomplishments and honors on the basketball floor are numerous. He was an all-district and all-region pick out of District VIII and was selected to the 2003 TSSAA Class AAA All-State Tournament team. A "Best of Preps" pick by the Memphis Commercial-Appeal this past year, Strong scored over 1,500 points and collected 170 steals during his prep career. "ETSU is getting a player who is a hard worker and a team player," said White Station head coach Terry Tippett. "I think it's important to point out that his stats are in light of the fact that we had a 14-player rotation his junior year and a 10-player rotation his senior year. Much of the time, Travis would only play two-thirds of our games because we would get up by 30 points and sit our best players." Strong joins A.J. Jackson (Monessen, Pa.) and Aaron Scott (Houma, La.) as members of the Buccaneers' 2003 recruiting class. Bartow still has one scholarship remaining, but emphasized that he is looking for the right player to fill that spot. "We still need a big, inside player," Bartow said. "But we're obviously getting late in the game and if we can't find the right player, we will just hold off and wait for the right fit."
