Thursday, April 22, 2004JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 22, 2004) - East Tennessee State University men's basketball coach Murry Bartow announced Thursday that 6-foot-6, 230-pound swingman Chris Mitchell has signed to play with the Buccaneers beginning with the 2004-05 season. Mitchell, a JuCo first-team All-American selection, averaged 17.0 points and 10.5 rebounds last season under head coach Pete Norman at Highland Community College in Freeport, Ill. A native of Chicago, Ill., Mitchell was the regional and conference player of the year, and Bartow expects him to bring even more athleticism and versatility to an already talented ETSU lineup. "Chris is a very experienced player that will bring an immediate toughness to our lineup," said Bartow, whose team is coming off a championship season in 2004 and has made back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. "He's got two junior college seasons under his belt and he knows what the college game is all about. He's just a producer - he rebounds, he blocks shots, he can score." Mitchell, who is interested in studying sports management at ETSU, averaged 14 points and seven rebounds as a freshman at Highland, and helped lead the team to the junior college national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., this past year. In addition, he averaged three blocks a game while at Highland. This completes the Bucs' 2004-05 signing class, as Mitchell joins Port Richey, Fla., native Andrew Reed and Peterborough, Ontario, Canada's Greg Surmacz as part of the incoming group of signees.
