(Jan. 5, 2004) -- East Tennessee State sophomore point guard Tim Smith (Newport News, Va.) had his best game of the season, leading the Bucs with 22 points on 10-15 shooting including a game-winning layup with just four seconds remaining in a 69-68 victory over Furman Monday evening from Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C. Smith scored the final four points of the game, connecting on two layups in the final 25 seconds with a Furman (7-5, 0-2 Southern Conference) turnover in between. The Buccaneers (9-4, 2-0 SoCon) trailed 29-28 at the half, after shooting just 34 percent in the first stanza. But ETSU came out on fire in the second half, shooting 52 percent from the floor and 57 percent from three-point range. Senior all-conference forwards Zakee Wadood (Lonoke, Ark.) and Jerald Fields (Gainesville, Fla.) also had impressive performances for the Bucs against the Paladins. Wadood scored 20 points and eight rebounds while Fields contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Junior guard James Anthony (Brandon, Fla.) scored just five points, but nailed one of the biggest baskets of the night as he hit a three-pointer to draw the Bucs within one point at 66-65 and set the stage for Smith's heroics. Anthony also added a team-high four assists while Smith, Wadood and Fields tied for the team lead with three steals each. Furman was led by guard Tony Carter, who tallied 12 points in the loss. Forward Maleye Ndoye scored 11 points while fellow forward Nick Sanders registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. The matchup was a battle throughout, featuring 10 ties. Furman never led by more than four points, holding their largest lead, 19-15, with 8:17 remaining in the first half. ETSU led by five on two occasions, 35-30, at 17:40 of the second half and shortly thereafter, 38-33, with 17:02 left in the game. East Tennessee State continues on the road to face Southern Conference rival UNC Greensboro Saturday evening at 7 p.m. from Fleming Gym.
