JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 6, 2007) - ETSU head basketball coach Murry Bartow announced Wednesday that Mott Community College standout and NJCAA Coaches Association Division II National Player of the Year Kevin Tiggs (Flint, Mich.) has signed on to join the Buccaneers' program next season.
Tiggs, a 6-4, 210-pound forward, averaged 18.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals a game a year ago, helping lead Mott to a 35-3 overall record and a National Junior College Athletic Association national championship. Tiggs becomes the fourth signee in ETSU's 2007-08 recruiting class, joining his former Mott and
"Kevin is a very versatile player who will certainly make a big impact on our program," Bartow said. "He's an exciting and athletic player who has the ability to make a lot of things happen. He scores, he rebounds, and he defends, which are a lot of things that translate into winning. Kevin's development is a credit to his coach Steve Schmidt and the program Coach Schmidt has built at Mott. It's a winning program and demands a high level of play, especially on the defensive end."
Schmidt said Tiggs - who was also MVP of the national tournament and competed in the Division II All-Star Game - will have a special opportunity to play alongside his former teammate and he complemented ETSU on its patience in the recruiting process.
"(Kevin) will now be able to spend the next two years competing alongside his Mott teammate and friend, Greg Hamlin," Schmidt said. "Murry Bartow and his staff did a good job with his entire recruitment and hanging in there as Kevin explored other opportunities."
Tiggs, who shot 62 percent from the field and dished out 2.5 assists in 32 games last season, said the closeness of the ETSU squad and the Bucs' recent success influenced his decision.
"Everyone on the team is together and there's no one thinking about I," said Tiggs, who was recruited by schools such as
Along with Tiggs and Hamlin, the Bucs' 2007-08 recruiting class includes forward Isiah Brown (
