Georgia Southern Rallies to Upset ETSU, 72-64
Friday, March 02, 2001
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Julius Jenkins had 10 of his 15 points during a 15-4 second-half run as Georgia Southern rallied for a 72-64 victory over top-seeded East Tennessee State at the Southern Conference tournament Friday night.
The loss by East Tennessee (18-10) leaves the league semifinals without its high-profile favorite in the College of Charleston and without the team with its best conference mark in the Buccaneers.
Charleston lost to Davidson, 57-54, earlier Friday.
Jenkins, the team's leading scorer, had only taken three shots in the first half as the Eagles (15-14) fell behind 49-39. But he found his range with two 3-pointers and two baskets during the critical stretch. His driving layup capped the run with Georgia Southern up 54-53 with 6:08 to play.
After Dimeco Childress made two foul shots to regain the lead for East Tennessee, reserve Sam Cox was fouled on a 3-point try and made the free throws as Georgia Southern took the lead for good with 4:02 left.
East Tennessee (18-10) scored only four points until the final seconds when the game was out of reach.
Georgia Southern will go against Chattanooga or Appalachian State on Saturday. Davidson will face North Carolina Greensboro. The champion, and the automatic NCAA tournament berth that goes with it, will be decided Sunday.
Sean Peterson led Georgia Southern with 17 points. Kashien Latham had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
