Johnson City, Tenn. (May 9, 2002) - East Tennessee State's men's basketball team has signed a recruit to a national letter of intent to attend ETSU and play basketball for the Bucs next season head coach Ed DeChellis announced today. Timothy Smith of Newport News, Va., becomes the third player to sign with ETSU for the 2002-03 season.
Smith, a 5-9, 160-lb. guard, played his prep ball at Hargrave Military Academy. A two-year starter at Hargrave, he averaged 14 points and seven assists during his prep career. In his two seasons as a starter, he helped lead his squad to a 60-4 record. He played with Keith Jennifer (Virginia), James White (Florida), Jason Clark (Virginia) and Rickey Shields (Rutgers) at Hargrave, which had its other four starters from this past season sign with Florida, Wake Forest, North Carolina State and Tennessee. Smith was also the starting point guard on Boo Williams' AAU national championship team.
"Tim is an outstanding point guard that has played well the past two years at Hargrave," said DeChellis. "His team has had an outstanding record over the past two seasons with Tim leading them. He has the ability to push the ball extremely fast from baseline to baseline and to get into seams and create to get other guys shots. He can also score and we feel he is a very good point guard that will compliment what we have in the program. We think he can come in and contribute right away; with Tim and Sam Oatman (Neenah, Wis.) as our two point guards we can move Ryan Lawson (Rogersville, Tenn.) back to his natural two-guard position."
