JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 1, 2004) -The Southern Conference named Tim Smith (Newport News, Va.) of East Tennessee State as its men's basketball Player of the Week on Monday. Smith, a 5-9, 155-pound sophomore point guard 27.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists in two games last week, helping the Bucs to a victory over Chattanooga (2/24) and a close loss at College of Charleston (2/28). Smith scored 27 points and handed out seven assists in an 84-72 win over the Mocs. He added 27 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in a 91-89 loss to the Cougars. For the week, Smith shot .511 from the floor (24 of 47) and also recorded four steals. "This is a real honor," Smith said. "I hadn't gotten one of these this year, and I've been working hard to improve my game. It's nice to see that work pay off. But it makes things easier when you have a great team around you, and we have some great players on this team." Smith, who earlier in the day was selected to the Coaches 2003-04 All-SoCon Team, was the most outstanding player at last year's SoCon Tournament and also took home freshman of the year honors a year ago. Also receiving consideration this week were Mindaugas Katelynas of Chattanooga who posted a pair of double-doubles last week; Elon's Montell Watson who scored 23 points in a triple overtime win over UNC Greensboro; Brendan Winters of Davidson who averaged 22.0 points and scored 30 in the regular season finale over Furman; the Citadel's Kevin Hammack who scored 15 points in leading the Bulldogs to a 68-65 win over Georgia Southern; Thomas Mobley of College of Charleston who averaged 18.5 points per game in a pair of contests last week; Jay Joseph of UNC Greensboro who became the school's all-time leading scorer; and Sam Daniels of Wofford who hit a career-high six 3-pointers against Chattanooga.
