JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 27, 2004) - The Southern Conference announced on Tuesday that East Tennessee State University senior Zakee Wadood (Lonoke, Ark.) has been named the SoCon Men's Basketball Player of the Week. It marks the second time this season that Wadood has been honored with the award.
Wadood, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound forward, averaged 21.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in helping ETSU to a pair of wins last week over Davidson and Appalachian State. With those wins, the Bucs remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play and hold sole possession of first place in the league's North Division with a record of 7-0 SoCon, 15-4 overall.
With a game-high 25 points and four rebounds, Wadood led the Bucs to a 75-70 win over Davidson on Jan. 21, hitting on a career-high four 3-point goals. Against Appalachian State, Wadood picked up his 24th career double-double with 12 rebounds and 18 points.
For the week, Wadood scored 43 points and had 16 rebounds, while converting on 16-of-28 field goals - going 6-of-10 from 3-point-range. In addition, he registered six assists, four blocked shots and four steals.
Heading into tonight's game at home against Wofford (7 p.m. tipoff), Wadood is leading the team in scoring (15.3 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg). The Bucs will also play this week at Western Carolina (Jan. 31, 7 p.m.) and host UNC Greensboro (Feb. 2, 7 p.m.).
