JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 24, 2002) - East Tennessee State University men's basketball coach Murry Bartow announced Thursday that he has filled the final vacant position on his coaching staff with former Penn State assistant Michael Boyd. Boyd, who spent the last seven seasons with the Nittany Lions, also served as an assistant coach at another Big Ten Conference program, spending 11 seasons at the University of Michigan before taking the head coaching position at Cleveland State in 1990. After coaching six seasons at Cleveland State - which included a 22-6 record and Mid-Continent Conference championship in 1992-93 - Boyd joined the staff at Penn State in 1996. "Mike will be a great addition to our staff and we are fortunate he has chosen to join us," said Bartow, who is in his first season at ETSU. "He is incredibly experienced as an assistant and head coach at the Division I level, and he has numerous contacts across the country because of his 18 years as an assistant in the Big Ten. We are getting an incredibly strong coach who fits what we are looking for in our program - a proven recruiter who is also a terrific floor coach." Boyd was equally pleased to be joining the Buccaneer program, especially after the kind of season ETSU enjoyed in 2002-03 - a campaign which saw the Bucs win their third consecutive Southern Conference North Division title, capture the SoCon Tournament championship, and make a trip to the NCAA Tournament. "I'm very happy to be on board and have the opportunity to work with Coach Bartow," Boyd said. "Without a doubt, in talking with Murry for a good length of time about the position and hearing his vision for the program, it excited me to be a part of it. I think ETSU has a team that is going some where and I want to be there to experience that." A 1970 graduate of Northern Michigan University, Boyd was instrumental in helping build Michigan's 1989 NCAA Championship team. He assisted head coach Bill Frieder with back-to-back Big Ten Championship clubs in 1985 and 1986 and an NIT Championship squad in 1984. The Wolverines were 237-108 during Boyd's 11 years in Ann Arbor. Boyd's recruiting resume boasts NBA standouts such as Glen Rice, Rumeal Robinson, Loy Vaught, Terry Mills, Sean Higgins, Gary Grant, Roy Tarpley, Tim McCormick, and Mike McGee - among others. Prior to Michigan, he served four years as an assistant at Kent State, including a stint as interim head coach in his last season at the school. Boyd played basketball at Northern Michigan, where he led the conference in scoring under the tutelage of coach Stan Albeck. It was Albeck who gave him his first job at Kent State. He was inducted into the Northern Michigan Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980. With this hiring, Bartow's staff is now complete as Boyd joins Will Bailey as the two newcomers to the assistant staff, while Scott Wagers will be entering his fourth season with the Buccaneers.
