Men's basketball shines in annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.  (Oct. 30, 2004) - In front of a full crowd at Brooks Gymnasium today the Buccaneer men's basketball squad competed in the annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage with the Blue team taking the 79-70 win for the afternoon.  With Homecoming festivities, an all-star mascot game, promotional prizes and finishing the afternoon with an autograph session with the team, the excitement level for the upcoming 2004-2005 season continues to rise.


Head coach Murry Bartow and his staff split the ETSU men's basketball squad prior to today's game where the Blue team consisted of: Aaron Scott (Houma, La.), Chris Mitchell (Chicago, Ill.), Brad Nuckles (Council, Va.), point guard Tim Smith (Newport News, Va.), Travis Strong (Memphis, Tenn.), Greg Surmacz (Ontario, Canada) and coaches Bartow and Will Bailey.  Heading the Gold team for the afternoon were coaches Mike Boyd and Scott Wagers with Dillion Sneed (Chicago, Ill.), Ben Rhoda (Dayton, Ohio), Andrew Reed (Port Richey, Fla.), Sam Oatman (Neenah, Wis.) and James Anthony (Tampa, Fla.) taking the court for the Bucs.


The final buzzer of the first half sounded with the Blue team having the slight 40-36 advantage over the Gold.  Led by Smith with 17 points and Nuckles with seven defensive rebounds during the first half this afternoon, the Blue team posted a 54.8 shooting percentage during the first half of the game.  For the Gold, Sneed posted ten points and five rebounds, while Rhoda and Oatman finished the first half with three assists each.


"This scrimmage was a great opportunity for our players and staff to evaluate where we are at this point and we saw a lot of encouraging effort this afternoon," coach Bartow said.  "Tim (Smith) and James (Anthony) played very well and our inside guys made plays all afternoon.  We still have work to do before we open our season but we saw a lot of good things during our scrimmage today."


The beginning of the second half both teams fell into a fast paced style of play with the lead changing hands several times throughout.  For the Blue team, Mitchell and Surmacz each added seven rebounds in the win, while Smith posted a game-high 28 points with five assists for the afternoon and Nuckles added 17 rebounds and 16 points.  Leading the Gold team was Anthony with 21 points and four rebounds, while Sneed, Rhoda and Reed added 18, 11 and 14 points respectively on the afternoon.


The ETSU men's basketball squad will host VASDA-USA in an exhibition game set for Nov. 13 at 4:00 p.m. before opening the 2004-2005 regular season at home versus UVA-Wise on Nov. 20 at 4:00 p.m.  The Lady Bucs basketball squad will open their season on the road versus Tennessee Tech on Nov. 19, game time is set for 7:00 p.m. (CST).  As always, visit for updates and scores for all of the Buccaneer athletic teams.
