Trips to Louisville, Arkansas, Tennessee and UAB highlight campaign,

along with visits from former SoCon rivals Appalachian State and Charleston

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 1, 2009) - With a schedule that includes national power Louisville, SEC opponents Tennessee and Arkansas, visits from former Southern Conference rivals Appalachian State and College of Charleston, and an early season stretch with eight games in just 17 days, the ETSU men's basketball team will face arguably one of the toughest slates in school history during the 2009-10 season.

ETSU head coach Murry Bartow - whose team is coming off a memorable 2008-09 campaign that included 23 wins, an Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship, and the program's eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament - announced the new schedule on Wednesday. He said the challenges are obvious.

"It's not going to be easy," said Bartow, who has guided the Bucs to three 20-win seasons and two trips to the NCAAs in his six years at ETSU. "The first part of the season is a real gauntlet, especially with the road trips to Louisville, Arkansas, Tennessee and UAB. We play seven of our first 12 games on the road, and five of those teams made the NCAA Tournament a year ago. We want to challenge our players, but at the same time we understand the economics right now and this schedule gives us the chance to help the overall program with a number of money games."

While the road trips to a quartet of major programs stand out, the Bucs will also play a total of five old conference foes, facing former SoCon rivals Appalachian State (Nov. 14), Chattanooga (Nov. 17), and College of Charleston (Nov. 25), along with former Ohio Valley Conference opponents Murray State (Dec. 12) and Morehead State (Dec. 18). The Appalachian State, College of Charleston and Murray State games will all be inside the Memorial Center, with the Bucs welcoming the Mountaineers and their new head coach Buzz Peterson - a former ETSU assistant - on Homecoming Weekend to open the regular season.

Other highlights on the schedule include the Bucs' trip to UAB (Dec. 4), as the Blazers will honor Bartow's father Gene for his Hall of Fame career. ETSU will return home the next week for another special event, as the Bucs will host North Georgia (Dec. 10) inside Brooks Gym. The "Back to Brooks" game will feature many special events, as the team will wear "throwback" jerseys and the program also plans to re-retire the No. 42 jersey of former great Tom Chilton, which was brought out of retirement and worn by standout player Kevin Tiggs the past two seasons.

The team's A-Sun schedule features a pre-Christmas visit from league contender Jacksonville (Dec. 21), while Lipscomb invades the Dome on Jan. 30 and arch rival Belmont visits on Feb. 1. The league tournament is set for March 3-6, hosted by Mercer in Macon, Ga.

"For our fans, this may be the most exciting and interesting schedule we've had in quite some time," Bartow said. "We have a lot of work in front of us, but the caliber of teams we will play both on the road and at home should make us ready for our conference schedule."
