Wednesday, August 11, 2010ETSU men to face Southern Miss in opening round at Christmas event
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 5, 2010) - The ETSU men's basketball team will face Southern Miss in the opening round of the inaugural Cancun Governor's Cup on Thursday, Dec. 22 at 2:30 p.m. (EST), according to ESPN Regional Television which announced the pairings for the eight-team tournament on Thursday.
The event, which will be played Dec. 22-24 at the Poliforum Benito Juarez in Cancun, Mexico, will feature ETSU, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Colorado State, Appalachian State, Texas State, Northeastern and St. Louis. The tournament's semifinal games will air live nationally Dec. 23 on ESPNU, with the third-place game and championship matchup airing Dec. 24 on ESPN2.
While the Bucs' complete 2010-11 schedule is not yet in place, ETSU head coach Murry Bartow said learning of his team's first round opponent in Mexico is another step toward finalizing the slate.
"It's a tough first round matchup for us," said Bartow, whose team is coming off back-to-back Atlantic Sun Conference titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament. "Southern Miss has a good team out of Conference USA and they are well-coached. We will have our hands full in Cancun, but this tournament offers us a chance to play three quality, neutral site games. If we enjoy some success there you also have the chance to play on ESPNU or ESPN2, so we're excited about this opportunity."
The 2010 Cancun Governor's Cup will feature 12 games through three days, Dec. 22-24. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated will face off in a championship game Friday, Dec. 24, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
