JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 24, 2013) – In a game that featured two teams putting on an offensive clinic, the ETSU men’s basketball team’s second half rally came up short as the Jacksonville Dolphins enjoyed an 83-80 win over the Buccaneers in Atlantic Sun Conference play Thursday night inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.

With the loss, the Bucs dropped to 5-15 overall, 3-4 in A-Sun play, while Jacksonville improved to 11-10, 6-2.

Trailing 65-52 with just under 12 minutes left in the game, the Buccaneers battled back to regain the advantage at 76-75 with less than two minutes left in the game. However, JU outscored the Bucs 8-4 the rest of the way, and a desperation 3-point attempt by ETSU freshman forward Lester Wilson (Knoxville) missed the mark as time expired.

“That was one of those games that can go either way, but they just made more plays at the end,” said ETSU head coach Murry Bartow. “The keys to the game were we scored 80 points and still lose at home – which is disappointing – I thought we should have been up 15 at halftime but instead we were up two, and the start of the second half we came out flat. When we analyze the final two minutes, what we will find is they just made more plays than we did late.”

ETSU led by as many as 11 points in the first half, as the Bucs shot 54 percent from the floor and 50 percent from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes. However, at that point Jacksonville combined to finish the first half on a 14-5 run and then opened the second half on another 23-6 burst to build its 13-point second half advantage.

The Bucs then outscored JU 24-10 over the next 10 minutes and took the lead 76-75 on senior guard Jarvis Jones’ (Memphis) 3-pointer with 1:56 left in the game. But in the end, it wasn’t enough.

Jacksonville was led offensively by a game-high 23 points from Keith McDougald, while Dylan Fritsch and Javon Dawson scored 17 and 16, respectively. JU finished the game shooting 54 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range.

For ETSU, the Bucs placed four players in double figures, with Wilson scoring a team-high 19 points, while junior forward Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard (Georgetown, S.C.) pitched in a double-double effort with 15 points and 10 rebounds. In addition, sophomore guard Rashawn Rembert (Tampa) scored 17 points and Jones finished with 15.

The Bucs will continue with A-Sun play on Saturday afternoon inside the Dome, hosting league foe North Florida at 4 p.m. For more on ETSU men’s basketball throughout the 2012-13 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the men’s hoops link.
