JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 22, 2013) – ETSU men’s basketball head coach Murry Bartow announced Friday that the Buccaneers have signed Hargrave Military Academy post player Karl Overstreet (Lynchburg, Va.) to a national letter of intent for the 2014-15 signing class.
Overstreet, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound center who is spending a year at Hargrave following his prep career at Glass High School, was a first-team all-region and Seminole District player of the year in 2013. As a senior, he averaged 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks a game.
“We’re very excited to have Karl as part of our program because we think his best basketball is definitely ahead of him,” Bartow said. “He is 6-10, really likes to play the game, competes hard, is a great teammate, and can really move up and down the court. We really like his ability to rebound and block shots, and he continues to improve on the offensive end.
“Karl comes from a great family and is a very good student, and he’s also very lucky to play for an excellent coach at Hargrave Miliary Academy in A.W. Hamilton, who will only continue to develop his game.”
Currently playing for the No. 2-ranked prep school in the country, Overstreet has participated in organized basketball for just six years. However, ETSU’s coaching staff has described him as a player with a great motor that is good in transition, while being deceptively athletic.
Overstreet said ETSU was the right choice for him.
“I really liked the coaches and I felt like I fit in well with the team,” said Overstreet, who is also an Eagle Scout. “The area was beautiful and I love the campus at ETSU. I’m looking forward to getting there next fall and getting to work. What I hope to bring to the team is defensive intensity and the ability to get up and down the court.”
