Bartow announces signing of JuCo forward Darius Forrest

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 13, 2013) – ETSU men’s basketball head coach Murry Bartow announced Thursday that the Buccaneers have signed junior college forward Darius Forrest (Jackson, Miss.) to join the team’s 2013-14 recruiting class.

Forrest, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, averaged 13 points and six rebounds a year ago. He finished second on the team in scoring, shooting 46 percent from the floor and 34 percent from 3-point range last season.

Bartow said Forrest is a player who combines length on defense with the ability to score.

“We really like what he can do on both ends of the floor,” Bartow said. “He’s really long and has a great wing span, so we expect him to do a lot defensively for us whether that’s blocking shots or rebounding. Offensively, he has a high basketball I.Q., and is a very athletic, capable wing player who can score the basketball.”

MGCCC head coach Wendell Weathers said ETSU fans will see that Forrest is an instinctual player.

“He’s a kid that does a lot of things naturally which are usually hard to teach,” Weathers said. “On both ends of the floor, he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. He plays hard and is always doing the little things that are the key to winning basketball games, but what most people will be impressed by are his instincts.”

Forrest said he wants to be a well-rounded player.

“Score, block shots, defend, play hard, that’s what I do,” said Forrest, who netted a 28-point effort in one game last season. “I really liked the coaching staff and the campus at ETSU. I’m excited to get there this summer and start getting ready for the season.”

Forrest joins four other players who have already signed to join the Bucs’ 2013-14 recruiting class, a group that includes Jaylen Riley (Racine, Wis.), Devin Harris (Tampa, Fla.), Maurice O’Field (Cleveland, Ohio) and A.J. Merriweather (Jackson). For more on ETSU men’s basketball throughout the offseason, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the men’s hoops link.
