SoCon Men’s Tourney: What ETSU fans need to know

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 1, 2016) – After collecting the second most single season Southern Conference wins in program history, the ETSU men’s basketball team will enter this weekend’s SoCon Tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C., with hopes of earning the program’s 10th trip all-time to the NCAA Tournament.

First year head coach Steve Forbes and the Buccaneers will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament after posting a 21-10 overall record and a 14-4 SoCon mark this season. The Bucs will play at 6 p.m. on Saturday, facing the winner of Friday’s matchup between No. 7 seed Mercer and No. 10 seed The Citadel.

In addition, the following information will help ETSU fans enjoy the entire weekend of ETSU baskeball in Asheville, as the women’s team opens on Thursday at 1:45 p.m., against Furman in the U.S. Cellular Center.

1) The Bier Garden: Pre- and post-game gathering for ETSU fans will be held at The Bier Garden, which is located a short walk from the U.S. Cellular Center at 46 Haywood St. in downtown Asheville. Meet here prior to and following each men’s and women’s basketball game to share in the fun of the SoCon Tournament.

2) Education Days: The Southern Conference will be playing host to local elementary school children in Asheville and the surrounding region for the 11:30 a.m. women’s quarterfinal round game on Thursday, March 3, and the 11 a.m. women’s semifinal round game on Friday, March 4. An estimated 3,000 students will witness high-energy collegiate tournament play.

3) Downtown Dribble & KidsFest: On Saturday, March 5 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in Asheville’s Pack Square, the Southern Conference, Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission and the YMCA of Western North Carolina will be hosting the Downtown Dribble and KidsFest. Pack Square in downtown Asheville will be populated by games, activities, bands, cheerleaders and mascots, as well as healthy lifestyle exhibits and interactives for children. KidsFest will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 11 a.m. with the start of the fourth annual Downtown Dribble. Each kid participating in the Downtown Dribble will receive a free T-shirt and basketball and participate in a dribble parade from Pack Square to the U.S. Cellular Center. Participants in the Downtown Dribble and KidsFest will also receive free admission to the men’s basketball quarterfinal-round session at noon. The Downtown Dribble and KidsFest are free of charge to all participants.

4) Basketball, BBQ & Beer: The Southern Conference, Asheville-Buncombe Regional Sports Commission and the Southern Conference Asheville Local Organizing Committee will host a pregame indoor tailgate party prior to the SoCon Men’s Basketball Championship on Monday, March 7. The event – named Basketball, BBQ & Beer – will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. and will take place in the concourse area of the U.S. Cellular Center. The event will give patrons an opportunity to sample fare from various Asheville-area barbecue restaurants and breweries. Tickets for the event will be $15, or $10 for designated drivers and those under the age of 21. Those attending the event will also need to possess a ticket for Monday night’s championship game, which will take place at 9 p.m.
