JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 14, 2018) – Head coach Steve Forbes released the 2018-19 ETSU men’s basketball schedule presented by BrightRidge on Friday, a slate highlighted by road games at Creighton and Illinois, participation in both the Cayman Island Classic and Sun Bowl Classic, six non-conference home games, and traditional rivalry matchups with Southern Conference foes such as Chattanooga, Furman, Wofford and Mercer.

Once again this year, the Bucs have continued a tradition of challenging themselves in the non-conference portion of their schedule. Since Forbes’ arrival prior to the 2015-16 season, the Bucs have led the SoCon in average non-conference opponent RPI (from 2015-16 through 2017-18), while also finishing second in the league over those three years in strength of schedule in non-conference play. This year’s group of non-conference foes feature six teams that either finished top four in their respective leagues or surpassed the 20-win mark a year ago.

“Scheduling is a long and difficult process for a myriad of reasons, and I appreciate the patience of our loyal fan base as we worked to complete this year’s schedule,” said Forbes, whose team is coming off a 25-win season and a third straight trip to the SoCon Tournament title game. “Each year, we work extremely hard to challenge our team with our non-conference schedule in preparation for the rigors of playing in the SoCon, and this schedule does that once again.

The non-conference schedule features road games at Big East Conference foe Creighton (Nov.11) and Big 10 Conference opponent Illinois (Dec. 15), along with trips to traditional Big South Conference power Winthrop (Nov. 17), former SoCon rival Georgia Southern (Nov. 27), and Sun Belt Conference champion Georgia State (Nov. 6) for the season opener.

In addition to those non-conference foes, the Bucs will host a pair of games in the mainland bracket of the Cayman Island Classic as they face Chicago State inside Freedom Hall on Nov. 19, before taking of the winner of Sam Houston State and Jackson State on Nov. 20. The Bucs will also travel to El Paso, Texas for the Sun Bowl Classic, playing Wyoming on Dec. 21 before facing the winner of UTEP and Norfolk State on Dec. 22.

The team will open SoCon play on the road at Wofford (Dec. 1), before starting the full slate of league games on Dec. 29 at home against Furman. Other top league matchups at home include Chattanooga (Jan. 5), UNCG (Jan. 19), Wofford (Feb. 7), and Mercer (Feb. 16). Key road contests for the Bucs include trips to Mercer (Jan. 12), Chattanooga (Feb. 2), Furman (Feb. 9) and UNCG (Feb. 23).

Following regular season play, the Southern Conference Tournament is scheduled for March 8-11 in nearby Asheville, N.C.
