Two top 10 teams in CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll set to meet inside Freedom Hall

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 6, 2019) -- When ETSU and Wofford meet inside Freedom Hall on Thursday night it won’t only be the biggest game in the Southern Conference, but arguably the biggest matchup among the slate of 65 NCAA Division I games that night.

Tip-off between the Buccaneers and SoCon unbeaten Wofford is set for 7 p.m. in Johnson City. Please note, the gates to Freedom Hall will open at 5:30 p.m.

With 19 victories apiece, ETSU (19-5, 9-2) and Wofford (19-4, 11-0) combine for 38 wins so far this season, the most of any matchup being contested across NCAA Division I on Thursday (No. 4 Gonzaga and San Francisco also have 38 wins). Thursday’s game is also a match-up of two teams ranked in the top 10 of the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll with the Buccaneers ranking No. 8 and the Terriers coming in at No. 2.

Four players scored in double figures and the Bucs netted 47 second-half points en route to defeating Chattanooga 77-64 last Saturday inside McKenzie Arena … Junior centerLucas N’Guessan (De Lier, Netherlands) scored a career-high 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while sophomore guard Bo Hodges (Nashville, Tenn.) added 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals … Sophomore guard Patrick Good (Johnson City, Tenn.) went 7-of-7 at the free throw line to finish with 13 points and junior guard Tray Boyd III (Memphis, Tenn.) posted 10 points and two steals … As a team, ETSU outscored Chattanooga 20-1 in points off turnovers and the Bucs were plus-26 in points in the paint (42-16) … The Bucs only turned the ball over 10 times with point guards Isaiah Tisdale (Lexington, Ky.) and Daivien Williamson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) combining for six assists and zero turnovers.


For the fifth consecutive week, the ETSU men’s basketball team is ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, as the Buccaneers moved up one spot to No. 8 in the most-recent rankings that were released on Monday night … The Bucs, who have been ranked in the top 10 over the last four weeks, sit at 19-5 overall and 9-2 in the Southern Conference … ETSU made its season debut in the poll at No. 14 back on Jan. 8, while the Bucs’ highest ranking this season has been No. 8, which has occurred twice this season (also on Jan. 15) … The Bucs are one of four SoCon teams ranked in this week’s poll as ETSU is joined by No. 2 Wofford, No. 3 UNCG and No. 24 Furman ... The SoCon is the only conference to have three teams ranked in the top 10 and four ranked in the top 25.


Since head coach Steve Forbes took over in 2015-16, the Bucs have had a lot of success playing inside Freedom Hall … Overall, ETSU is 48-9 (.842) inside Freedom hall during this stretch, while the Bucs are 10-1 at home this season … The Bucs had won 10 straight home games to start the season prior to their setback to UNCG on Jan. 19 ... During that stretch, the Blue and Gold won by nearly 25 points per game (87.9-63.1), while they shot 55 percent (329-603) from the field and held a +16.9 rebound margin (43.1 to 26.2) … Tray Boyd III posted 15.4 points game and shot 49 percent from beyond the arc during the run, while Mladen Armus (Belgrade, Serbia) added 10.8 points and 10.2 rebounds.


In the 11 home games this season, ETSU is averaging 86.1 points, while holding the opposition to 64.2 points (+21.9 scoring margin) ... The Bucs are shooting 54 percent from the field (355-661), 38 percent from three (90-238) and 69 percent at the free throw line (147-213) ... The Blue and Gold are also out-rebounding their opponents by 15.6 per game (42.6 to 27.0) inside Freedom Hall ... In games played away from home, ETSU is averaging 75.1 points, while opponents are at 68.7 points per game (+6.4 scoring margin) ... ETSU is shooting 44 percent from the field (369-832), 35 percent from three (109-312) and 65 percent from the free throw line (129-198) in 13 road games ... Tray Boyd III is averaging 15.5 points per game inside Freedom Hall, while shooting 50 percent from the field (64-129) and 46 percent from beyond the arc (37-80) ... In the 13 road games, Boyd is averaging 8.5 points, while shooting 36 percent from the field (44-124) and 27 percent from three (20-73) ... Mladen Armus is averaging 10.3 points and 9.9 rebounds, while shooting at a 67 percent clip (46-69) at home; however, in the 13 road games, the Buccaneer sophomore is averaging 6.4 points and 6.8 rebounds, while shooting 41 percent (33-81) ... Isaiah Tisdale is averaging 10.1 points per game in 12 road contests, while posting 6.3 points in 11 home games.


Over the last three games, ETSU point guards Isaiah Tisdale and Daivien Williamson have combined for 21 assists and one turnover … Tisdale has 13 assists to one turnover, while Williamson has dished out eight assists without turning the ball over … As a team, the Bucs have a 1.8 assist/turnover ratio over the last three contests … ETSU also averaged less than 10 turnovers over per contest and was +6.3 in turnover margin


During the Bucs’ three-game road swing, the Blue and Gold forced the opposition into 48 turnovers (16.0 per game), resulting in ETSU posting 79 points off those miscues (26.3 per game) … On the flip side, opponents registered just 13 points off turnovers (4.3 per game) ... In total, 33 percent of the Bucs’ points scored came off turnovers.


ETSU has seven players averaging over 8.0 points per game with Patrick Good leading the team with 12.0 points per game ... Tray Boyd III (11.7) and Jeromy Rodriguez (11.5) are also averaging double figures, while Bo Hodges (8.8), Daivien Williamson (8.7), Isaiah Tisdale (8.3) and Mladen Armus (8.2) are all at eight points or higher … On Saturday, N’Guessan became the seventh different player to lead the Bucs in scoring.


Lucas N’Guessan has been near perfect over his last three games as he has made 10 of his 11 shots (90.9%) … In his last five games, the Buccaneer center is 15-of-17 (88.2%), while shooting 76 percent (35-46) in 13 games played this season.


Isaiah Tisdale is averaging less than one turnover per game in SoCon play (35 assists to 8 turnovers) … Lucas N’Guessan is shooting 75 percent in 10 conference games (30-of-40) … Patrick Good is 9-of-11 on two-point attempts … Patrick Good and Daivien Williamson are a combined 37-for-41 (90.2%) at the free throw line.


The Bucs still lead all Division I teams in total rebounds (1,002) and rebound margin (+12.5) … The Blue and Gold also rank seventh nationally in rebounds per game (41.8), 14th in offensive rebounds per game (13.7), 15th in total assists (386), 18th in scoring margin (13.5), 24th in field goal percentage (48.5), 29th in win percentage (.792), 34thin defensive rebounds per game (28.0) and 38th in scoring offense (80.1).


Individually, Jeromy Rodriguez ranks fourth fifth nationally in total rebounds (271), sixth in rebounds per game (11.3), 12th in defensive rebounds per game (7.9), 14th in double-doubles (12) and 17th in offensive rebounds per game (3.4) … Isaiah Tisdale ranks 13th in assist/turnover ratio (3.3), while Mladen Armus is 44th in total rebounds (198) … Patrick Good ranks 27th in total three-point field goals made (73), 35th in three-point field goals made per game (3.2) and 37th in three-point field goal attempts (178).


Wofford has won 10 straight games and enters Thursday’s game at 19-4 overall, 11-0 in SoCon play … The Terriers are coming off a 99-61 win at The Citadel last Saturday where Wofford made a season-high 20 three-pointers, including four each rom Fletcher Magee, Storm Murphy, Nathan Hoover and Tray Hollowell.

The Terriers’ last setback was a 98-87 loss at Mississippi State back on Dec. 19 … Wofford hasn’t dropped a SoCon game since falling 69-68 to Mercer back on Feb. 25, 2018.

As a team, Wofford ranks fifth nationally in scoring margin (+17.4), sixth total three-pointers made (251) and three-point field goal percentage (.410), seventh in three-point field goals per game (10.9), 10th in rebound margin (+7.9), 12th in win percentage (.826), 16th in field goal percentage (.489), 18th in scoring offense (83.3), 20th in assist/turnover ratio (1.42) and 24th in turnovers per game (11.0).

The Terriers are led by senior guard Fletcher Magee and senior forward Cameron Jackson … Magee is averaging 19 points per game and 4.1 threes per game, while Jackson is posting 14.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest.

Magee ranks third nationally in total three-pointers made (94) and three-pointers per game (4.1), fourth in free throw percentage (.936) and 48th in total points (437) … Magee also ranks fourth all-time in career three-pointers made with 445.  

All four of Wofford’s losses have been to Power-5 teams – North Carolina (78-67), Oklahoma (75-64), Kansas (72-47) and Mississippi State.

The Terriers are 18-1 when outrebounding their opponent this season.


ETSU leads the all-time series, 35-12, but Wofford has won seven of the last 10 games in the series ... Over the last seven meetings, Wofford holds a slight 4-3 advantage with the total points scored being 520-507 in favor of the Terriers during this stretch ... The Bucs have won seven of the last nine meetings played in Johnson City … Bo Hodges is averaging 12.3 points and shooting 50 percent (15-30) in three career games vs. Wofford.
