Bucs to hold inaugural Diaper Derby sponsored by Johnson City Honda; One lucky fan will win $1,000 gift card to Ferguson and a year supply of Pepsi Product and one student will win a 50-inch 4K TV

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 1, 2019) -- After beginning the season with summer workouts and tipping things off back in early November, the ETSU men’s basketball team concludes regular season play this Saturday when the Buccaneers host Western Carolina on Senior Day. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. inside Freedom Hall.

THINGS TO KNOW

Below are the “Top Things to Know” for Saturday’s regular season finale…

No. 1 –Saturday marks the final regular season home game for the Buccaneers as they eye the regular season sweep over the Catamounts. ETSU sits at 22-8 overall and 12-5 in SoCon play, while Western Carolina is 7-23, 4-13.

No. 2 –Due to a large amount of pre-sold tickets, gates to Freedom Hall will open at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 423-439-3878 or online here.

No. 3 –Saturday’s game sponsor is Ferguson. One lucky fan will win a $1,000 gift card to Ferguson as well as a one-year supply of Pepsi product. 

No. 4 –Prior to the game, the ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will honor senior forward James Harrison, Jr. (Dallas, Texas) and graduate manager Bryan Forbes in a pregame Senior Day ceremony. At halftime, the senior class from the cheer and dance teams will also be honored.

No. 5 –The Diaper Derby sponsored by Johnson City Honda! The Bucs invite all children between six to 12 months of age, who crawl, to participate in a halftime race where the fastest crawler will win a custom ETSU and Johnson City Honda Power Wheels vehicle. No. 6 –Student Giveaway – One lucky student will win a 50-inch TV during Saturday’s game. The first 500 students who arrive at the student section will receive a raffle ticket to be eligible for the drawing.   

ABOUT THE BUCS

LAST TIME OUT

Freshman guard Daivien Williamson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) gave the Buccaneers the lead with a pair of free throws with 15.4 seconds remaining, but UNCG sophomore guard Isaiah Miller answered with the game-winning bucket. Miller scored on a running lay-up with 3.8 seconds remaining to lift the Spartans to a 60-59 win over ETSU on Sunday afternoon from the Greensboro Coliseum … Williamson was one of three Buccaneers to finish in double figures as he totaled 10 points on 6-of-6 shooting at the free throw line, while junior Jeromy Rodriguez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) registered his 14th double-double of the season. Rodriguez finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds, while going 6-of-8 from the field but 4-of-11 at the free throw line. Junior guard Tray Boyd III (Memphis, Tenn.) scored eight of his 11 points in the first half … For the game, ETSU shot 43 percent from the field (19-44), went 3-of-15 from beyond the arc and 18-of-27 from the free throw line (6-12 in the second half). The Spartans shot 38 percent (22-58), while going 5-of-18 from three and 11-of-15 at the free throw line (8-11 in the second half). The Blue and Gold had 17 turnovers and only assisted on six of their 19 makes, while UNCG totaled 13 assists and 10 turnovers. The Bucs were plus-5 on the glass (35-30), but got outscored in the paint, 32-28.

CLOSING IN ON 100

Following their 24-point win at VMI last Thursday night, the Bucs registered their 98th win since head coach Steve Forbes took over the program in 2015-16 … The 98 wins are the second-most victories over a four-game stretch in program history … The Blue and Gold tallied 99 wins from 1988-89 to 1991-92 – the only other four-game stretch of 20 wins seasons in school history.

ETSU ON PACE TO AVERAGE 5,000 FANS IN SOCON PLAY

As the ETSU men’s basketball team gears up for its final regular season game of the 2018-19 season on Saturday, the Buccaneers are on pace to average 5,000 fans in Southern Conference play for the second consecutive year … The Bucs, who are averaging over 4,900 fans in their first seven league games, need 5,500 fans inside Freedom Hall for Saturday’s game against Western Carolina to average 5,000 fans this season in SoCon play … Over the last three years, ETSU has led the SoCon in total and average home attendance, while also posting the nation’s 15th best increase for average attendance from the 2015-16 season to the 2016-17 campaign. During the last four seasons, ETSU has totaled 16 games with over 5,000 fans, including four sellout crowds in the last three seasons.

SEEDING FOR SOCON TOURNAMENT

With the top two seeds locked in for next weekend’s SoCon Tournament, the Bucs know they will either be the No. 3 or No. 4 seed in Asheville … For the Blue and Gold to be the No. 3 seed, ETSU has to beat Western Carolina and have Furman to lose at Chattanooga (Saturday at 2 p.m.) … If Furman wins at Chattanooga, the Bucs will then be the No. 4 seed … The No. 3 seed will take on the No. 6 seed Saturday, March 9 at 8:30 p.m., while the No. 4 seed faces the No. 5 seed Saturday at 2:30 p.m. … The No. 5 and No. 6 seeds have yet to be determined, but they will feature either one of the three teams – Chattanooga, Mercer or Samford.

BUCS RANKED IN COLLEGEINSIDER.COM MID-MAJOR TOP 25 FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT WEEK

The ETSU men’s basketball team made its appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll for the eighth straight week as the Buccaneers are ranked No. 16 in the most-recent poll that was released on Monday night … The Bucs made their season debut in the poll at No. 14 back on Jan. 8, while they have been ranked as high as No. 8 … ETSU is one of four SoCon teams that are ranked in the poll.

NATIONAL LEADERS

In addition to being ranked in the Top 25, the Bucs are also among the NCAA Division I leaders in several statistical categories, including still leading the country in total rebounds (1,224) and rebound margin (11.7) … The Bucs also rank 10th nationally in rebounds per game (40.8), 13th in offensive rebounds per game (13.4), 17th in field goal percentage (48.6) and total assists (475), 25th in scoring margin (11.4), 34th in total steals (224), 39th in scoring offense (79.7) and 46th in win percentage (73.3).

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

Several Bucs are listed in the top-50 in the NCAA individual rankings … Jeromy Rodriguez is ranked sixth nationally in rebounds (336), seventh in rebounds per game (11.2), 11th in offensive rebounds per game (3.5), 16th in double-doubles (14) and 17th in defensive rebounds per game (7.7) … Isaiah Tisdale ranks 14th in assist to turnover ratio (3.00) and Patrick Good ranks 37th in total three-point field goals made (86), 49th in three-point field goal per game (2.97) and 50th in three-point field goal attempts (215).

SINGLE SEASON RECORDS

When it comes to all-time single-season team records, the 2018-19 Bucs are closing in some marks in the record book … ETSU’s 11.7 rebound margin is currently the highest all-time with the 1966-67 team ranking second at +8.0 … ETSU’s 11.4 scoring margin currently ranks second all-time behind the 1990-91 season that posted a 17.2 mark … The Bucs’ .486 field goal percentage currently ranks seventh behind the 2016-17 team that posted a .288 clip … ETSU has made 238 three-pointers which ranks eighth all-time and need to make seven to move into seventh … The Bucs are averaging 80.4 points per game and are looking to become the 12th team in program history to average over 79.7 points per game … The 22 wins are tied for 14th all-time, while a win Saturday would move ETSU into a tie for 12th.

INDIVIDUAL SEASON LEADERS

When it comes to individual single-season Buccaneer leaders, junior guard Isaiah Tisdalec urrently ranks second in assist to turnover ratio at 3.00, while Jeromy Rodriguez’s 106 offensive rebounds rank second all-time … Rodriguez needs three more offensive rebounds to break the Zakee Wadood’s record of 108, set in 2001-02 … Rodriguez also ranks ninth in total rebounds (336) and needs three to move into eighth and eight to move into seventh … Patrick Good’s 86 made three-pointers are tied for fifth all-time with Courtney Pigram (2006-07), while Good needs five to pass Rashawn Rembert (2014-15) for fourth and nine to move past Ge’Laun Guyn (2015-16) for third all-time … Rembert holds the all-time record with 108, set in 2013-14, while T.J. Cromer’s 106 made threes in 2016-17 rank second all-time.

BUCS CONTINUE ON 3-POINT STREAK LIST

Since Feb. 16, 1987 in a game against Davidson, the Bucs have made at least one 3-pointer in 993 consecutive games ... ETSU was 0-for-8 in that 1987 game ... The Bucs currently rank as the sixth-longest streak in the NCAA, with UNLV topping the list.

FOURTH STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASON

The Bucs registered their fourth straight 20-win season with their 91-83 win over The Citadel back on Feb. 14, marking just the second time in program history ETSU has posted four straight seasons of at least 20 wins (1988-89 to 1991-92) … In addition, Coach Forbes became the first Buccaneer head coach in program history to lead teams to four straight 20-win seasons … During this run of 20-win seasons, the Bucs have had a different player lead the team in scoring – Ge’Lawn Guyn with 18.6 points in 2015-16, T.J. Cromer at 19.1 points in 2016-17, Desonta Bradford with 15.4 points last season and Jeromy Rodriguez currently leads the Bucs this year with 11.7 points per game … The Bucs are the first SoCon team to reach this milestone since Davidson (2004-05 to 2008-09). 

WINNING WAYS

Since the start of the 2015-16 season, ETSU has totaled 98 wins during this span, which tops all SoCon teams as well as team in the state of Tennessee … The Bucs have a six-win advantage over the second-best team in UNCG during this run … ETSU has registered four straight 20-plus win seasons since the arrival of head coach Steve Forbes, which is just the second time in program history this feat has been accomplished.

ABOUT WESTERN CAROLINA

Western Carolina has lost back-to-back games and six of its last seven as the Catamounts enter Saturday’s game at 7-23 overall and 4-13 in SoCon play.

The Catamounts are led by junior forward Carlos Dotson and freshman guard Kameron Gibson … Dotson is averaging 13.6 points and 9.4 rebounds, while shooting 61 percent and Gibson is posting 13 points, 2.0 assists and has made 70 three-pointers.

Western Carolina is averaging 71.6 points per game and allowing 79.5 points, while they have a plus-3.2 rebound margin (35.6 to 32.4).  

Western Carolina has dropped 15 of its 18 games played away from Cullowhee, N.C.

SERIES HISTORY

ETSU leads the all-time series, 55-25, which includes its 91-69 win over the Catamounts back on Jan. 26 … Patrick Good (Johnson City, Tenn.) set the new single-game three-pointer record with 11 threes and poured in a career-high 35 points en route to becoming the 16th player in program history to score at least 35 points in a game … Good broke Courtney Pigram’s record of 10 made threes, which was set back on Feb. 28, 2009.

The Blue and Gold have won seven straight and 24 of the last 25 in the series … ETSU has also won 13 straight at home against the Catamounts, with the last setback coming on Feb. 24, 1996 (93-91).

The Bucs’ last loss in the series was a 67-61 decision in the 2015 SoCon Tournament back on March 7, 2015.

In three career against the Catamounts, Mladen Armus (Belgrade, Serbia) is averaging 11.3 points and 8.3 rebounds, while shooting 67 percent (14-21) in 24 minutes of play.
