Assistant coach Brooks Savage enters his 16th year of college basketball and his fifth season at ETSU in 2019-20. After rising through the ranks as a student manager, graduate assistant, video coordinator and Director of Operations, he has served as an assistant coach the last eight years. Savage has amassed a record of 180-88 overall while his teams have finished first or second in conference play in six of those eight seasons. During his six years in the Southern Conference, his teams have posted an 82-24 (77%) conference record finishing in the Top 3 each year.

Since joining the ETSU staff in 2015, Savage has served as recruiting coordinator and helped lead the Bucs resurgence – producing a 55-17 conference record and one Southern Conference title while appearing in three straight championship games from 2015-18. The 2017 NCAA Tournament appearance was the 10th in school history and first since 2010. The Bucs 100 overall wins during this time ranks sixth nationally among Mid-Majors and marks the third best four-year run by any SoCon program in the last 30 years.

Over the last four seasons, Savage has also overseen academics for the Bucs that has led to a perfect graduation rate. In addition, Savage has been the point person for scheduling during his time with the Blue & Gold.  While the success of the program has created challenges in scheduling, the Bucs have amassed a non-conference record of 36-16 (69%) in four years, including going 14-3 in series started by the current staff.

Honing his craft under five Coach of the Year award recipients, Savage has become a respected recruiter, evaluator and player developer. His efforts have contributed to working with over 50 players who’ve gone on to play professionally and more than 30 All-Conference players, including three conference Player of the Year, two Defensive Player of the Year and one Freshman of the Year award winners. Savage’s teams have been post-season participants in 10 of the last 14 years including two NCAA Sweet 16’s, an NCAA Elite Eight and the NJCAA Final Four.

Prior to joining ETSU, Savage was an assistant at UT-Chattanooga from 2013-2015. His contributions there helped produce a 40-25 (27-7) record and contributed to the Mocs’ turnaround that led to their SoCon championship in 2016.

Before UTC, Savage entered the DI assistant ranks in the Big South conference by helping lead Presbyterian College through the Division I transition during the 2012-13 season. This followed a championship year in 2011-12 as an assistant at Northwest Florida State College where the Raiders 32 wins set a school record, won the Panhandle Conference title and finished as the National Runner-Up. At NWF, Savage helped recruit and develop 11 players that went on to earn Division I scholarships. In 2010-11, Savage served as the Director of Video and Player Development at Tulane University.

During each of the 2018 and 2019 off-seasons, Savage was invited to participate in the prestigious TopConnect conference.  This college basketball networking event provides a platform for up-and-coming assistant coaches and athletic directors from around the country to learn from one another and help prepare the assistants to become future head coaches.

A native of Irmo, South Carolina, Savage holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Sport Management/Business from the University of Tennessee. During his time at UT, Savage worked as a Student Manager and Graduate Assistant from 2004-2010 and earned valuable experience as the Vols made the NCAA tournament in five of his six seasons. Savage and his wife Lauren were married in 2018.
