Boone, N.C.(October 4, 2002) - East Tennessee State's men's and women's cross country team competed in the Blue Ridge Cross Country Open hosted by Appalachian State Friday night. The men and women finished fourth and third respectively. Sophomore Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) led the Buccaneer's placing seventh with a time of 25:31.30, followed by James Grufferty (Glanmire, Ireland) who finished 12th (25:55.90). David Haeffner (Hamburg, N.Y.) placed 15th in the time of 26:03.10. The women were led by junior Emily Chaney (Maryville, Tenn.) who placed 13th in the time of 19:38.40. "This was not a competitive team effort, we must be more prepared mentally and physically," said assistant coach Michelle Byrne. "We race next Saturday at Furman and that is a chance for us to improve." The men and women's teams both travel to Furman Saturday, October 12, for the Furman Invitational.
