LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2012) - ETSU men’s and women’s cross country made a strong showing at the 11th annual Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday.
The men’s team earned an 18th-place finish in the 31-team 8k race while the women’s squad finished 21st in the 43-team 5k race. The men’s race featured 255 runners and the women’s race had 337 individuals.
“I am pleased with the continued progress of both the women's and men’s teams following our meet at Louisville today," stated head coach George Watts.
Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) led the men’s squad with a season best time of 24:54.11 and a 67th-place finish, followed by Anders Ludvigsen (Odense, Denmark) with a time of 25:21.01. Landon Milhorn (The Woodlands, Texas) crossed the finish line at the 25:27.74 mark for a 117th-place finish. Adam Chase (Kingsport, Tenn.) posted a time of 25:38.59 and Desmond Pierce (Morristown, Tenn.) rounded out the Bucs' top-five with a time of 25:51.41.
"The men ran another solid race with all but one guy running a personal best. The wet conditions slowed the times down so I was happy to see the improvement made in today’s race. Filip led the team for the second time this season and ran under 25:00 for the first time in his career. Anders, Landon, Adam and Des continue to fill out our top-five and I am optimistic as we move forward to the key point in the season,” said Watts.
Freshman Katie Hirko (Oley, Pa.) led the way for the Lady Bucs for the second-straight meet with a fifth-place finish and a time of 17:57.80. Chelsea Clark (Farimont, W. Va.) finished 30th with a mark of 18:36.62 while Melissa Peters (Mesa, Ariz.) clocked a 19:39.00 time. Lisa Pallotta (Leesburg, Va.) posted a time of 20:08.81 followed by Jessica Palmer (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) with a 20:26.59 time to round out the Bucs’ top-five.
“The women all ran personal bests as Katie Hirko continues to be a pleasant surprise leading the team for the second meet in a row. Chelsea and Melissa have done a great job as upperclassmen in bringing the others along in training and race preparation. I look forward to both teams continuing their improvement as we move toward the conference and regional championships,” noted Watts.
The Bucs will return to action on Oct. 12 at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C.
