Strong performances at Virginia Tech propel the pair
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Sept. 24, 2014) – A pair of ETSU cross country student-athletes collected Southern Conference Runner of the Week Awards with Matt Warriner (Maryville, Tenn.) representing the men and Katie Hirko (Oley, Pa.) representing the women, the league office announced Wednesday.
Both Buccaneer runners earned the accolades following strong performances on Friday, Sept. 19, at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. At the meet, the men finished third overall while the women placed fifth in an event featuring multiple nationally-ranked teams on both sides.
On the men’s side, sophomore Warriner led the pack for the Blue & Gold with a 10th-place overall time of 25:17.80. This time is a career best in an 8K for the Maryville native and the honor is his first conference Runner of the Week accolade.
For the women, Hirko paced the Bucs with a 10th overall placement and a 21:43.90 time. The junior was the only runner not from the top-two scoring teams -- Florida State and North Carolina -- to finish inside the top 10. This award is the first SoCon Runner of the Week honor for Hirko and her fourth overall league Runner of the Week recognition dating back to ETSU as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 26, when it travels to Kernersville, N.C. to compete in the UNC Greensboro Spartan Invitational. This course is the same that will be used for the 2014 Southern Conference Championships.
