JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 1, 2016) – The ETSU men’s and women’s cross country 2016 schedule has been released, as announced by Director of Cross Country/Track & Field George Watts on Monday.
The Bucs open up the season in Boone, N.C. at the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State University on Sept.2. It’s the first time since 2014 the Bucs have competed in the meet.
“We have a very competitive schedule that will test both teams early in the season,” said Watts. “We will get an early look at many of our South Region competitors as well as some of the top teams in the country.”
Ending the month of September the Blue and Gold will compete against nationally-ranked competition at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on September 16. Last season in one of the bigger meets of the year, both the men’s and women’s cross country programs finished seventh. Simeon Roberts (Greeneville, Tenn.) paced the men with a sixth placed finish while the women were paced by Victoria Hutchens (Stuart, Va.) who finished 34th.
ETSU will compete in four meets during the month of October beginning with the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on October 1 hosted by the University of Louisville. During the meet a year ago, Roberts paced the men’s side for the third straight week while the women had two in the top 100.
For the second straight year the Bucs will head to the Wake Forest Invitational in Kernersville, N.C. where last season both the men’s and women’s team finished in the top ten. ETSU will head to the ISU Pre-National Invitational on October 15 for their final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championships on October 30, hosted by the University of Chattanooga.
“As always our goal is to be at our best for the conference and regional championships,” said Watts.
At the SoCon Championships a year ago, the blue and gold enjoyed much success as the men’s team finished third while the women’s team finished fourth. Roberts posted a time of 25:04.04 to finish 13th and earn Second Team All-SoCon honors. James Garst (Jonesborough, Tenn.) finished behind Roberts in 14th to garner SoCon Freshman of the Year honors.
On the women’s side, Hutchens just missed out on an all-conference selection placing 16th with a time of 19:12.33. The women’s team looks to capture its first SoCon Title since 1999.
The NCAA South Regional will be hosted by Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla. on November 11. The NCAA Championships will be held on November 19 in Terre Haute, Ind., hosted by Indiana State University.
