Hilton Head, S.C. - The East Tenneessee State University men's golf team shot a season-low 290 and stands in 16th place after the first round of the 14th annual Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational tournament.
The University of Texas leads the tournament with a first-round score of 272, 16 under par. ETSU stands only six shots out of ninth place and will look to improve its position during tomorrow's second round.
ETSU was led by Chris Wisler and Pat Beste at even par 72. Beste and Wisler are tied for 39th in the individual standings. Adam Riddering and Adam Gary eached checked in with 73 and are tied for 51st. Thomas Lee, ETSU's remaining player finished the day with a 74 (T-62).
The 54-hole tournament is being played on the Arthur Hills at Palmetto Dunes golf course. It is a par-72 course that measures 6,651 yards from the Championship tees. East Tennessee State won the tournament in 1995.
The tournament features many of the nation's top teams including No. 1 ranked Clemson and 1999 NCAA Champion Georgia. Also joining East Tennessee State are Arizona State, California, UCLA, Duke, Florida Southern, Georgia Tech, Houston, UNLV, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, South Carolina, Texas and Texas Christian.
