Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State senior Pat Beste shot an even-par 70, leading the Bucs to a third-place finish after the first round of the Southern Conference Mens Golf Championships from the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The No. 8 Buccaneers shot a first-round 287, and are four shots behind the leaders, the Furman Paladins.
All five Buccaneers finished the first round in the top 20. Beste, the 2000 SoCon Championships individual medalist, is in a three-way tie for sixth after the first round. Fellow sophomores Thomas Lee and James Johnson are tied for 14th after shooting matching 72s (+2) in the first round. No. 8 Chris Wisler and sophomore Adam Riddering find themselves in a nine-way tie for 20th after both shooting 73s (+3).
The second round of the Southern Conference Mens Golf Championships will tee off at 12:20 p.m. while Sundays final round will begin at 8 a.m. The Buccaneers are in search of their fourth-straight tournament crown.
