Saturday, September 11, 2004JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 11, 2004) - Oklahoma's Anthony Kim ended his freshman season as winner of the Phil Mickelson Award, which is given annually to the nation's top freshman player. Now a sophomore, Kim picked up where he left off Saturday at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges.
Kim began the 2004-05 season with a pair of 68s, finishing at the top of the individual leaderboard at 8-under-par and giving his Oklahoma team (290-282=572 -4) a two stroke lead over Clemson, TCU and Tennessee after two rounds at the seventh annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges hosted by East Tennessee State University.
"I expected to play well," said Kim, who finished 2-over at this same event last year. "Last year, this was my first college event and it was really hectic. This year, I'm more comfortable with school and what college golf is all about. I hope I can continue to play well enough for our team to win."
Five strokes separate the top six players on the leaderboard, with Kim leading Clemson's Brian Duncan (68-69=137) by one stroke and Wake Forest's Webb Simpson (68-70=138) by two. Meanwhile, TCU's Drew Pigg and Colby Beckstrom, as well as Tennessee's Philip Pettitt rounded out the Top 5.
As for the host team, ETSU head coach Fred Warren was surprisingly upbeat despite his team's current standing on the leaderboard. The Bucs entered the event without two of the team's best players - sophomore Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) and freshman Cian McNamara (Limerick, Ireland) are both playing internationally this weekend - but Warren still saw a lot of positives, especially the play of freshman Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) and sophomore Cennydd Mills (Cardiff, Wales).
Mills finished tied for 10th at 1-under and Shaw posted a second-round 70 to finished 1-over after the first day.
"I saw some very good golf from Gareth and Cennydd, and Stephen Arnold (Langhorne, Penn.) played a very solid first round for a sophomore," Warren said. "This course played very difficult at times and I saw some encouraging things out there."
Final round play is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. Sunday.
