LIHUE, KAUA'I, HAWAI'I (March 14, 2009) - Placing all five players in the Top 20 and four players in the Top 7, the 27th-ranked ETSU men's golf team captured the team championship in the Kauai Collegiate Classic Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course.
"I'm really proud of our guys and putting all five players in the Top 20 was good for us," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren, whose team finished the event tied at 4-under-par 860 with former Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern, but won the tiebreaker scenario. "We're happy with the win and we played really well this weekend."
The Bucs were led once again by junior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland), who posted his second straight round of 3-under-par 69 to finish second on the individual leaderboard at 7-under 209 (71-69-69), just one stroke back of individual champion Logan Blondell of Georgia Southern. The second place showing was Power's best of the season so far, and the team's first place showing was also a season high for the squad.
Along with Power, freshman Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland) and sophomore Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) also posted their best finishes of the year, with Stewart placing fifth at 1-under for the event, and O'Kane finishing tied for seventh at 2-over. Sophomore Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) also tied for seventh with O'Kane, while senior Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh, Scotland) tied for 20th at 7-over.
The Bucs will return to action March 30 at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational in Braselton, Ga. To follow the Bucs throughout the 2009 spring season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the men's golf link.
