MACON, Ga. (Mar. 24, 2011) - Following an impressive victory against the No. 1 player in the country at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championships, the Atlantic Sun Conference announced that ETSU senior Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) has been selected as the league's Golfer of the Week.
O'Kane, who received his first A-Sun golfer of the week award honor, helped lead the Bucs to a solid eighth-place showing at the highly competitive Callaway Match Play field. O'Kane battled four nationally-ranked opponents in his four matches of the event.
Following three narrow defeats in his first three rounds, O'Kane came through for the Bucs as he defeated the nation's No. 1 player, Patrick Cantlay of UCLA, in the final round of the tournament. UCLA, the tournament's top-seed, got a scare as it looked like the No. 15-seeded Bucs were going to pull off the upset. However, UCLA's Alex Kim defeated ETSU freshman Lucas Armstrong (Church Hill, Tenn.) in a sudden death tiebreaker on the 20th hole of the match, giving UCLA a narrow victory.
O'Kane's best finish of the season came at the JU Invitational where he finished tied for 14th following a strong final round of 69 (3-under).
The Bucs will take some time off from tournament play before returning to action on April 11 when they participate in the Wofford Invitational.
