BRASELTON, Ga. (April 18, 2011) â€" ETSU freshman Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) fired a team-low 1-under 70 to lead the Bucs on the opening day of the Atlantic Sun Championship played on the Chateau Course at Chateau Elan.
Lawson, who sits in a tie for eighth place, was one of just 11 players in the 55-player field to shoot an under-par round on Monday. ETSU currently sits in seventh position after an opening day 293 (+9) as a team.
Host Kennesaw State leads the 11-school field after a 4-under 280 in round one. USC Upstate, UNF, and Campbell are all tied for second at 285 (+1). Florida Gulf Coast (286) is fifth, followed by Belmont (291) and defending champion Bucs. Mercer and Stetson are tied for eighth place (294), while Jacksonville and Lipscomb are tied for 10th (298).
Matthew Hopper of USC Upstate carded a five-under-par 66 and stands atop the 55-man leader board. Jeff Karlsson of Kennesaw State is second at four-under 67, one stroke ahead of teammate Matt Nagy (68).
The 54-hole tournament continues with the second round Tuesday and Wednesday's final round. Live scoring is available on-line at www.Golfstat.com. ETSU will begin Tuesday's round at 8:45 a.m. from the first tee paired with Mercer and Stetson.
ETSU junior Devin Komline (Dorset, Vt.) is currently tied for 15th after a 1-over 72. His round included four birdies and five bogeys.
Sophomore Patrick Spraggs (Rochford, England) shot an opening round 75 and is tied for 35th, while freshman Lucas Armstrong (Church Hill, Tenn.) is just one behind Spraggs as he opened with 76 and is tied for 39th. Senior Paul Oâ€™Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) rounded out the ETSU scoring with a 77.
The Chateau Course, which features contoured fairways, thick Bermuda roughs, and strategically placed lakes and ponds, opened in July 1989. Built on 170 acres of the finest terrain, the 7,030 yard layout of the Chateau Elan Course, designed by Denis Griffiths, plays to a par 71. Winding along three lakes and two creeks, water comes into play on 10 of the 18 holes while 87 bunkers line the layout.
