RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (Feb. 19, 2012) – Freshman Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) fired a 2-under par 70 to lead the ETSU men’s golf team on day one of the Puerto Rico Classic, Sunday afternoon at Rio Mar Country Club.
Gibson, who is currently tied for sixth place and just three shots from the lead, had five birdies on the day. He was 4-under and had a share of the lead through 14 holes, but recorded back-to-back bogeys on the next two holes.
No. 8 Alabama has the team lead after compiling an impressive 12-under opening day team score – putting them seven shots ahead of No. 13 Clemson (-5). No. 34 Oklahoma (-4) sits in third and was the final team to shoot an under-par round on the day. ETSU is tied for 14th withMichigan after opening with a 306.
Justin Thomas of Alabama, the No. 12 ranked individual in the latest Golf Stat rankings, has the individual lead as he opened with a 5-under 67. Adam Schenk of Purdue is just one back after a solid 68 and a trio of players sit two back of the lead at 3-under.
Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) was the next best ETSU finisher on day one as he shot a 77 and is tied for 55th.
Meanwhile, Peter Wilson (New Locust, N.Y.), who played his first competitive round since last fall, is tied for 61st after tallying a 78. Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) shot 81 to round out the top four ETSU scores.
